| that's why i love music. it's like a drug to me. i can actually feel like a metallic thing going down under the wonders of the sea and staying there safely until the song is over. life can be so simple this way. beautiful song. beautifully bizarre music. | |

i dont care who this song is about. i consider that the song is about friendship. i mean true friendship. when everyone leaves jane and when she goes from a queen to absolutely nothing and she has no one left, the one who sings the song (dylan or anyone else) tells her that she can always count on him. cause he doesnt love her for her highness or her influence. unlike all the other snakes. |

| Bob Dylan – It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry Lyrics | 14 years ago |

pardon my english if it's not perfect :) i like to think of this song as a sad song with its slow tempo and beautiful beautiful music. the first thing that made me pay attention to the lyrics was the phrase "if i die on top of the hill And if i dont make it You know my baby will". i always thought it's about a man who had a fight with his lover and who's trying to run away on a train. he's meditating on his window and thinking about the girl he left behind and who may be running after him. he may be feeling sad and lost without the girl he loved, and very lonely on the train that's taking him away from the people "i could not get across". although he's sad, he's certain that it's all the girl's mistake he left "i wana be your lover i dont wana be your boss..dont say i never warned u.." in this way the title means something as well, cause it takes a lot to laugh indeed (life doesnt really give us the chance) but it can simply take a train (referring to the fight and walking away from the loved on) to cry. i really loved the sexual interpretation as well. |
