| I'm sorry "Johnny" is called Jack in the book. I went back and read the book again. | |

I understand why everyone here is pretty much in agreement that it is some kind of abstract song about two people of opposite personalities or one person with two personalities. And I can guarantee it has nothing to do with drugs. It is about the the book Lord of the Flies by William Golding. Johnny (or Little Johnny in the book) and Rodger were two characters. Half way through the book when the children are left to their own devices, Rodger becomes the torturous tyrant which in the song is punctuated by the sudden switch of "oh no it's Rodger" which is not correct in the lyrics above... after the musical interlude it is supposed to be: Sweet little boy Johnny Sweet little boy Oh no it's Rodger The chorus consists of two main lines, and for the life of me I cannot remember exactly what the reference in the first line is, but the second line is the point of view of the author/book in stating that it is explaining the human psyche. More proof of my conclusion is seen in the introductions of the two characters. Mind you both children in the story were from England, hence the English accents in their hellos. Johnny (in the book) was always trying to get the other children to see that what they were doing was wrong, as seen in the lyrics as "complain in vain". Where as Rodger in the book proclaimed himself as the king of the children and made them worship him, as seen in the lyrics as "I like to proclaim myself a god and lightly ordain myself". Honestly I only read the first page of comments so if anyone else posted this, I'm sorry but I didn't copy you. And I am really sorry for shattering all of the other peoples view on this song...but you are wrong. |
