Dire Straits – Ride Across The River Lyrics 14 years ago
Mr. Knopflers' deep jewish heritage may actually reveal the songs meaning to be based on the book of Joshua. The Lord commands Joshua to lead the Israelite across the Jordan River into the land the Lord had given them. The soldiers are gathered and sent into battle, but God is ultimatley in control of the battle outcome. All of the towns and cities were delivered into the hands of the soldiers. Before the soldiers were ordered to attack the trumpet was sounded and that is what we hear at the songs beginning. One of many great Biblical songs he has written about. On a side note, "Dire Straights" could describe the condition the Jews were in when the had the Red Sea in fornt of them and Pharoa's army attacking from behind.....maybe?

Dire Straits – Brothers In Arms Lyrics 14 years ago
Mr. Knopfler's is deeply rooted in Judaism, "Brothers in Arms" is an early biblical event were two brothers are reuntied after years of famine and slavery.

Genesis 45: 14-15 "14Then he Joseph threw his arms around his brother Benjamin and wept, and Benjamin embraced him, weeping. 15 And he kissed all his brothers and wept over them. Afterward his brothers talked with him."

I think the sentiment of the song finds roots this historical reunion. Knopfler's twin sons are named "Joey" and "Benji". Knopfler is a masterful artist of double meaning poetry. Most of the comments archived are all relative interpretations.

Joesph was from the Canaan (low lands) and was taken into Egypt (home for me now). The suffering he saw was not war but starvation. In Egypt they worshipped many gods (so many different worlds) and the sun gone to hell would have believed to cause of famine.

"And though they did hurt me so bad" Joseph was sold into slavery by his own brothers. After 435 years of slavery, the Isrealites were brought out of Egypt by Moses and "returned to their valley's and their farms" (Israel)

Although he was sold into slavery by his own brothers, he was not hostile towards them, Fastfowrding in the story line, Joseph becomes governor over all of Egypt If God did not arrange for what seemed to be the end for Joseph, but as governor he was able to save his brother and all of the tribes of Israel from the famine. He would have been a fool to make war on his brothers, instead he saved them from suffering. Deep!
