I used this song for one of my literary essays this year at school, and I interpreted it a little differently. To me, the first verse really sets the tone for the whole song. Especially the "Because the air we breathe is thinning with the words that we speak" I think that this just shows that in this world, words are so important. That what we say (or don't say) can torture us. The second verse, about being afraid of what's outside the door, could be about being to afraid to face people, and being afraid of the words that they might hear. As it goes on about "But the codes and keys can protect you from the pangs of jealousy" I believe it means that you can hide behind technology, instead of facing the real world. But the last words of the song, the on and on of "We are alive" just means that we are alive and we shouldn't hide behind non-human things. The final message I got through this song, was that we just need to say what we have to say, or else we will spend our whole life hiding behind emotions, and regretting what we never said. |
