Sister, it seems like just yesterday Sister, don't you forget my number on the door You've got something and it's so good to see Something wonderful that I could not be Everybody hanging on for their lives But you can't help 'em 'cause you don't have the time I know everyone goes any damn place they like I hope this goes over well on the toxic radio You get taken all the time for a fool I don't know why You're so gullible but I don't mind That's not the problem And I don't need anyone with me right now Monday Tuesday is my weekend You get taken for a fool all the time Oh, I don't know why Blame yourself for once, quit putting it on me I can't help you 'cause I've see what it means It's so early, I don't want to wake up Oh, we're so lucky 'cause we never grew up Mama! It feels like (us/just/it was) yesterday Mama don't you forget my number (I don't wanna be the one to let go) I know everyone goes any damn place they choose And I hope everyone (will/well) on the toxic radio A tourist in the ghetto, not afraid of anything Except death and anything else That can maybe hurt them, oh, yeah You get taken all the time for a fool I don't know why You're so gullible but I don't mind Well, that's not the problem And I don't need anyone with me right now Monday Tuesday is my weekend You get taken all the time for a fool I don't know why You get taken all the time for a fool I don't know why Well, I don't know why |

Holy shit, LizardKingJM71, this is exactly what my friends and I have been saying for the past, like, year, holy shit. We were thinking on parallel planes, but I thought nobody else had thought the same; I was wrong. We got it, dude! Except you explained it much more eloquently and coherently than we ever did. If enough people independently think of the same thing, then the chances of that thing being true, in my opinion, greatly increase. Damn, dude, I am very excited. |

| The Strokes – Metabolism Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
I agree with afrolady. The song has a definite tone of anxiety, as if he's worried about death, about not having done something special, impactful in his life. Metabolism is not really how fast one digests food, but the breakdown and regeneration of body cells. Many times, metabolism is equated to the progression of the body, ie. a person maturing, getting older. Maybe the career, personal life or philosophical achievements that Julian (or the whole band) has accomplished in their lives do not seem to them enough. Like, they are not satisfied with what they have gotten done in life, and are worried that life will run out and they will have made no impact or change or anything meaningful. It's a pretty universal worry ("I guess"). |
