Animal Collective – Flesh Canoe Lyrics 11 years ago
Friend-y love between males can be a lot stronger than the prescription for heterosexual males allows. Why does it have to be called gay? I think a non-romantic friend-ish love that sounds like this is beautiful.

He's going to continue performing this on future tours, right, please, right?

The Antlers – Nashua Lyrics 13 years ago
It is indeed beautiful. You can hear so much regret and sorrow in Peter's voice when he sings "I could have been so much better for you" and "Because it's no use." And yet the melody is so far from sounding like a downer song, especially for The Antlers.

The Antlers – Shiva Lyrics 13 years ago
I really am conflicted as to the meaning of this song. On the one hand, I've thought pretty much since I first listened to Hospice that this was after her death and that the noise at the end of "Two" was her dying. It would just make sense with the name of this song being "Shiva," and I thought the lyrics supported this too: I believed that the awkward and misshapen bed was a coffin like BooTheGhost said, and that the patient "checking herself out" was indeed her dying.

Then again, it also always seemed weird to me that the tone of the album waited to get so dark and sorrowful until "Wake" if the patient really did die at the end of "Two." That makes me question my original assumptions that she was dead, and that instead, in this song he's putting himself in her shoes while she's still alive.

Also, all these comments defending Jim were written before the wonderful song, "I Saw It" was written, so we can add that to his credit.

Barenaked Ladies – Spider in My Room Lyrics 14 years ago
"Then a voice above my head
Said if that spider were made dead
I'd better grow some fins 'cause
It would make it easier to swim"

I always thought was some Buddhist thing, threatening reincarnating him as a fish if he killed the spider.

Barenaked Ladies – I Live With It Everyday Lyrics 14 years ago
I don't think you can kill a twelve-year-old with a bebe gun. I don't even think the cycle-by shooting and the suicide attempt are related. I think they're just examples of guilt and shame to varying degrees that Steve uses intelligently to get the message across.

I also don't think guilt is the best word to describe what this song is about. Shame is better. I think it's more about being shamed by your actions because they're so inconsistent with the kind of person you want to be than feeling guilty about hurting others.

Also, does anyone else still feel guilt and shame for fairly excusable things they did when they were young? That's what the first verse reminds me of. Still feeling disturbed by childhood mischief and impulsivity.

This song is absolutely hilarious if you take it completely literally.

Steven Page – Entourage Lyrics 14 years ago
This song is about the obsession with the sexiest and most envied people in the room. For someone in music like Page, those people are the celebrities who go to the flashy parties and are mobbed by paparazzi.

We all know these are shallow desires stemming from shallow emotions like lust and jealousy, antagonistic to everything good about human interaction like love and emotional intimacy, and yet we can't shake them.

It's about our desire to be with these celebrities, which really stems from our desire to be them. (Note the change from "I want to sleep with you" to "I want to be like you.") When we recognize that we can't be them the only resort to be with them, settling for being in their "entourage."

Tracy Chapman – Fast Car Lyrics 14 years ago
I think the fact that this page has 115 comments speaks to the range and richness of this song. It touches upon so much like dreamy escapism, the blindness of love, the heartbreaking disappointment of dreams and so much more that others have mentioned. You can even entertain the interpretation made by someone that the whole song is a daydream that is crushed by reality at the end of the song. Top it off with the fact that the music is beautiful and now it's one of the greatest songs ever.
