I think the timeline is broader. "All the way from where we came" could indicate European migration. "Built a mansion in a day" sounds like the quick rise of America/Canada through the industrial revolution. "Distant lightning, thunder claps; Watched our neighbor's house collapse; Looked the other way" - The growth wasn't all good and pure, slavery, child labor, the civil war, etc. "And then the storm was overhead; All the oceans boiled and rivers bled; We auctioned off our memories" - World war I and the great depression. We truly considered ourselves Americans now, at war with some of the countries we originated from, auctioning off our memories, or auctioning due to the great depression. Pushed away I'm pulled toward A comedown of revolving doors - Fate, bad karma, yin and yang, revolving doors indicates what goes around eventually comes back around. "But then the storm returned for more" - Probably the great recession or the next depression about to arrive (financially and environmentally like the great depression was) due to our haphazard use of resources and greed-based financial systems. The songwriters (Jimmy and Emily) want this to happen, to finally get past the time we are in now so that a better system that respects resources and people can be created. One of their best songs, without a doubt. |

@[maddievic2:21819] Adding a bit to this, there are other biblical references too, "With metal on our tongues And silver in our lungs", in Revelations 19:15 is a reference to Jesus defeating the beast "Coming out of his mouth is a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations". The sword is the word of God. And in the old testament Numbers 10 refers to "The Lord said to Moses, “Make two silver horns of beaten silver. Use them for calling the people together and for having the people move on." Our silver lungs could be a reference to these horns. So while I agree with many of the other interpretations, I think there is a lot of double-meaning going on referring to biblical events, especially apocalyptic events in Revelations. |

| The lines refering to "...when they close the gates I'll cry..." and the orphanage could also be taken more literally in that a prostitute had a child and couldn't raise them on the street, so sent them to the local orphanage, yet still loves and visits the child. Other than that, drugs, prostitution, making money any way you can on the streets. | |

| I agree with get2close2theflame that the song is about Emily's experience at shows on the road. In the refrain "It's all, not one" could refer to her solo efforts and how she's feeling more upbeat about being part of a group again. "No sleep; I lose everything" on the road including losing your bearings and sense of being. "Oh don't tell me again, I won't see you again." could refer to what guys in the crowd always yell... "I love you Emily!!", etc. | |
