summed it up pretty well...but seeing as how dave has said he is agnostic, i do believe that the lyrics have a more (anti)religious overtone. i don't think the lyrics are meant to 'bash' any particular religious group, but i do think that he is expressing disdain for those zealots you mentioned. "praise god, who has many names, but the devil has many more. with the love that my mother gave me..." i feel like this line references, like in many other songs, his belief that love is his religion. as an agnostic myself, i totally relate to this. "hello, god! i'm avoiding the truth!" i think this line definitely alludes to the fact that so many people let religion become their truth because it is just easier to fathom...anyway, i also think that this is why music is so wonderful-you can interpret it however you want. that's my take. |
