The Decemberists – A Beginning Song Lyrics 9 years ago
I love this song so much, it displays everything brilliant about the band and this album in particular.

When I first looked at the lyrics I wondered if it was a song sung to someone who is experiencing mental health issues or just overwhelmed by life (the wife of a celebrity perhaps?).

The singer starts by saying "Let's commence to coordinate our sights
And get them square to rights."

He is saying "OK, let's make sure we're on the same page before we get into this."

Going on he says "Condescend to calm this riot in your mind.
Find yourself in time."

I take that to mean the subject has a riot going on in their mind but given the right love and support they will 'find themselves'.

As for "Now commence to kick each brick apart
To center on your heart" the singer is saying he will get rid of any obstacles which stand in the way of getting to the heart of the one he loves.

He then goes on to complete the repeated lyric "all around me ..."

Then comes a list of all the reasons for his being there, some are polar opposites (The sunlight, the shadow - the quiet, the word). These opposites reflect the almost bi-polar nature of the subject.

In the end the reason the singer has for being there is the person he loves and the bright light they are to him.

Anyway, that's my first ever contribution to this page (first of many I hope) :-)

The Decemberists – Odalisque Lyrics 14 years ago
I think in the lyrics above the word ‘pradies’ is a misspelling of ‘praties’ which is an informal Irish term for potatoes.

The ‘thirty-ought’ is a shotgun cartridge, when filled with rocksalt it doesn’t kill the victim but is said to cause an incredible amount of pain. There is a scene in Kill Bill in which Budd shoots the bride with a cartridge filled with rock salt. I think this links in with the kit bag full of marbles and a broken billiard cue. They are implements of torture or ways to inflict a lot of pain on the victim without killing them, possibly to extract a confession. The bag of marbles is like a pillowcase filled with door knobs, which I think is a mafia method of torture. You’ll remember from the Dark Knight that in one scene Joker gets two gangsters and tells them “we’re holding try-outs”, he then breaks a billiard cue in half and gives the thick end for the gangsters to use on each other. It’s a make-shift club to batter someone with.

‘Sapling switches’ are thin braches of a young tree which are used as a whip, after the britches have been mended they will be torn again when the wearer is flogged.
