I am surprised the significance between the great journey across the Atlantic from Ireland to New York have not been mentioned. The "queue for the lifeboat" line - and "women and children" are a reference to the tragic Titanic, which of course left from Ireland to New York in 1912 I feel that this song is about a man leaving Ireland, a bad marriage - he has probably been divorced - he is having a mid life crisis - He looses all the stuff in his head - all the chaos in his cell phone - he looses his regrets as he sets off to New York to start a new life - Despite the "iceberg" - (titanic) "I hit an iceberg you know Im still afloat" - refers to the emotions that hold you back, your self doubt, past failures, life's sometimes immense difficulties He now has a future, due to his unconquerable dream of New York and a New Life Something New York has always represented, especially to the Irish "Irish been coming here for years seems like they own the place" |

Like the tides of the sea the movement of the moon on the water - the light of the sun upon the moon everything is in rythem and harmony. Life flows like a river and this song is about the moment of love, often called a small death. Look it up. The rythem of the music in time with the lyrics suguests a deep breathe of love shared between two people in love. I believe it is haunt me/hurt me. Saying dont hurt me - is the most important step before you just let go and fall in love. Listen to this song and think about the love you feel with your lover, someone you really love, when you are in their arms. normally just before or just after sleep and awake. Hunrahsun |

| David Bowie – Station to Station Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| cannon means a set of rules/orders/creeds. I think it in this song it refers to rules - it was like a human rights convention thing after ww2 - the UN, which forever somehow and however well intentioned then dictated the future rules of politcs and peoples cultures and lives from that perspective. so yeah I think its about how now the modern age/cannon is encroaching and your just not free in that anyway more - ie. from now on people will always have to be protected from some sort of evil nature that is possibly within them because of ww2. sad. we won freedom though apparently so you know its all bad. thinking of churchill says by the kinks now! so the exilleration is like the freedom from without that. as though before the wars it never was - that growing political restriction and grip, and there was freedom. | |
| The Killers – Joy Ride Lyrics | 14 years ago |

Hi there, as someone who has just passed their driving test i finally feel free (it was much harder for me to be able to take this testfor personal reasons, but I did it!) - i listen to this song when I drive. I never once thought it was about prosititution - Im female, and besides, though the lyrics are sexual they dont seem to be about prositution because there is no way the Killers would glorify this "when your chips are down - joy ride" if they meant pick up a hooker - sounds as though they would be recomending it to young naive fans, they wouldnt do this as they are religious and fathers - references to prositition could be made in other songs/albums but they would not glorify it, they would speak of it sadly or with hope for something better... Obviously its a happy song, its a joyride - sex is involved, but "move across the night - and freeway" thats about driving is it not! Yes there is sexuality in the song, but that often makes a song - but its not its entirety. Unless I dont understand men at all because Im suddenly thinking of love is the drug by roxy music - Im thinking as I type. Yes you could read irony into it, but I highly doubt it, The Mona Lisa was simply a woman with a beautiful smile - how can the song not just be about that glorious feeling of exciting possiblity of life when you are young free? "reaching for the light" Sometimes people just cant seem to remember that life and happiness are incredibly simple, and thats what this song is about to me. Its about having fun, simple as that - the poetry is effortless and reflective but it is not innuendo. It is sort of like station station by bowie of course. Apparently thats about hunting for drugs. IN the early 20th centuary there was much poetry and art created reflecting the state of mind achieved and found whilst one is travelling from place to place, in trains, planes and automobiles. I could reference the many examples but I cant remember precisely, Im sorry for that. There are paintings of people on trains - paintings of nomadic people living lonely lives on the road all sitting in silence in road side cafes etc. The world became new, exciting and so did people - but they were often lonely, always searching. I think after "human" this song is about joy and the good things to be found and searched for in life. |
