Led Zeppelin – Stairway to Heaven Lyrics 14 years ago

I also presented this as a side note with my litary analyst in College English. Here's my theory on the black-masked version of the song, this would be for the people that believe in the superstition for the blacked-masked version.

I read an article in an old Guitar World Magizine about Jimmy Page's involvement on a film project called "Lucifer Rising" in the mid-to-late 60's with occultist film director/actor Kenneth Anger, both of whom followed Aliester Crowley and his works. The deal was Page would write the score for the film, but when Anger heard the music that Page had recorded for the film he kicked him of the project and cursed him. Very few people have heard Pages music for the film, even Page recalls it as his best work. Then Anger hired a musician/actor/writer, Bobby Beausoleil, later this man made Anger angry with his music. So, Anger cursed him and Beausoleil later goes to a compound out side of San Fransico lead by Charlie Manson.

Here's where my theory comes in, if one believes in this superstition. So Beausoleil curse, if you believe in superstition and other powers, was to be taken in by Manson Family and later jailed for life for mutli-murders. Page's curse, if you believe in superstition, could be the blacked-masked version of "Stairway To Heaven." Forever leaving a shroud of superstition on the song. A song that will be know through out the ages as one of the best pieces of music in 1900's, that will be left stained by a curse. Also, forever immortialzing Kenneth Anger. Not that this would make it an evil song, it would just show Anger's deep-seeded hate towards Page and the rest of Led Zeppelin.

But in all honesty I think that "most balck-masking" is just power of suggestion or just happened by chance, but for thoses of us that believe superstition and other forces this would be the best explantion to the black-masked version.

This is the rough draft for a literary analyst that I did last year in College English and it got me a pretty good grade. Please leave comments or rate, unless you’re a jerk that’s going to criticize me about the Lord Of The Rings or the Religion of the song…..you know who you are.
Robert Plant ,the lead singer and songwriter said in the beginning of one concert, “I think this a song of hope.“ This is a song that revolves around hope of a new day. It is a song about never stop believing in your faith. It is a song that applies to all creeds. I think this song means whatever you want it to mean because Plant never really said what it means. It could be about good vs. evil, The Lord Of The Rings, or the Pied Piper of Hamlin. I see how people can get these references out of this song, especially good vs. evil and the Lord Of The Rings. A theory that I read about in a magazine says it’s the battle between good and evil within the band. Plant was a fan of J.R.R Tolkien’s works; Christian themed novels, and Page was a reader of Aleister Crowley’s works; occultists themed works.

“There’s a lady who’s sure all the
Glitters is gold
And she’s buying a Stairway to Heaven
And when she gets there she knows that the stores are all closed
With a word she can’t get what she came for.”

The lady who Plant sings about is a woman who is trying to buy her way in to Heaven (Stairway to Heaven). So in short ,she is trying to buy her immortality. This lady he sing of thinks all that glitters is gold. Gold is a metal that is proven to last forever (gold = immortality). So all that looks like gold must be immortal ,or so she thinks. Many myths in Greek ,Rome ,and Norse mythology involve this set up. A mortal trying to put a price on the immortality of the immortal soul. The stores in the song are churches because in olden days churches ,especially in the desert culture, churches were also the bizarre. The church is not actually closed ,she just can’t get what she came for. Meaning that no one could help her get what she wanted ;immortality, only she is able to do that. She couldn’t get what she wanted with gold or human riches.
Or if you’re looking at this from the Lord Of The Rings point of view, this could be a reference to Aragorn because he appeared to be just a lone rider; pretty much a thug, but his destiny was to be the King of All Men. Pretty much saying don’t judge a book by it’s cover. Also, the Lord Of The Rings revolved around hope so the theory could fit.

“There’s a sign on the wall
But she wants to be sure
‘Cause you know sometimes words have
Two meanings
In a tree by the brook there’s a song bird
Who sings sometimes
All of our thoughts are misgiven.”

The sign on the wall is the written word of God (or higher power in any religion). (The Bible for the Christians ,the Koran for the Muslims ,and the Torah for the Hebrews. Eight fold Path for the Buddhists) In many parts of any written holy text ,many words or stories have two separate meanings. “Sometimes words have two meanings.” ,means that many people perceive things differently ,no one knows the meaning that is implied ;except the person that wrote them…..except in the case of this song. The song bird symbolizes a prophet or soothsayer of any religion ,who is stating his faith, by saying that my god is a forgiving one. And as in most faiths of the world ,the last line of this verse focuses on forgiving. (Jesus said “Turn the other cheek.”)
The bird could also represent Gandalf the White giving his sage advice whenever it is needed. Gandalf was also very keen one forgiving the mistakes of the Hobbits throughout the adventure.

“There’s a feeling I get when I look
To the West
And my spirit is crying for leaving
In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke
Through the trees
And the voices of those who stand looking”

This next verse has many different meaning ,especially the first three lines. The Western World (America) represents the modern culture of greed. This makes sense because this song is also about greed and avarice. And his spirit doesn’t want to be like the West. In the next interruption, the West is also the culture of Christianity. So his spirit wants to leave and set sail for the West. Also in many religions the sun is reprehensive of god ,and the sun sets in the West ,so he wants to set his spirit free to be with his god. The visions he see are visions of the end of time or visions of the end of his life. The voices of the people are atheists and evolutionists that have no faith in a higher power who are calling out the men of faith.
In the Lord Of The Rings the west was where the Shire was, home of the Hobbits. This could be Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin wanting to return back to the Shire. The “rings of smoke through the trees” could be a reference to the destruction of the Shire that Frodo saw in Galadriel’s Mirror. Or a reference to the dark works of Saruman at Isengard.

“And it’s whispered that soon is we all
Call the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason
And a new day will dawn for those
Who stand long
And the forest will echo with laughter.
And It makes me wonder.”

The first line is an allusion to Revelation in the Bible. (The time is almost right for the savior) Now this is a very deep part. The “Piper” can represent any savior of any religion ,and from the occultist point of view the piper would be the Anti-Christ. (Which would fit into to Revelation spectrum of the Bible. Again a call back to the fact that every word have two meanings. Piper can = Jesus or Muhammad, or Sheba or even the Anti-Christ. Really deep stuff) The Piper (savior) will lead his faithful to reason and to prosperity. The “New Day” is the day the piper come forth and reviles his true self and leads his people ,much like Moses. The last line is just one of Plant’s musings.
This could also be Aragorn (The Piper) reuniting men of Middle-Earth under one banner. The people hoping for a better day.

“If there’s a bustle in your hedgerow
Don’t be alarmed now
It’s just a Spring clean for the May-Queen
Yes there are two paths you can go by
But in the long run
There’s still time to change the road you’re on”

Now here’s where the bass and drums kick in. And here is the infamous “black-masked verse.” Black-masking is a technique of putting subliminal messages in a song ,so when they are played backwards the message can be heard. Also words when said backwards have a secret hidden message. Supposedly this verse when played backwards is a message to Satan about the selling of their souls to him (“Sometime words have two meanings“ another call back to that statement) ,but the lyrics to this song were written in just one day, by Robert Plant the fan of Tolkien, so the theory that it was done on propose by Plant can’t be real. The whole album was recorded in the castle of an occultists leaded and before that it was a church that had burned to the ground killing the congregation inside. Jimmy Page later had ownership of the castle. Jimmy Page also had dabbled in “black-magik.” Page was also a fan of the famed occultists Aleister Crowley. Some say Jimmy Page had used his occultists black-magik to put the message in there. But I think that it is all power of suggestion. People are going to hear what they want to hear. And if your playing a song backwards you are intentionally looking for a hidden message.
When the band is asked about this verse Page and the rest of the band always responded with, “No comment.” So, this puts a shroud of superstition on the subject of Page’s affiliation with the occult. Also, in the film “It Might Get Loud” Jimmy Page was asked about the process of making Stairway To Heaven he gave no comments and looked a little confused and worried; atleast he did to me.
The bustle in the hedgerow ,is a sin or a problem in your mind or in your soul. Don’t be afraid ,we’re all sinners ,is what the first two lines mean. The May-Queen is symbolized by a higher power ,who can forgive sins. Everyone has the option to be good or evil. (The two paths)
But at any time you want you can change your path. (Freewill) So by this logic ,we are the masters of our own destiny. This I do believe to be true.
The Lord Of The Rings point of view would be when Frodo is becoming more and more attached to the Ring Of Power. Evil thoughts fill his head as he get closer to Mordor. “Yes there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run there’s still time to change the road you’re on.” Could be about Frodo wanting to keep Gollum around to see if this low and miserable creature can change….which he does, but only for a short time. He had to believe Gollum could change because the closer Frodo became attached to the ring; he needed hope to know that he could change.

“Your head is humming and it won’t go in case you don’t know
The Pipers calling you to join him
Dear lady can you hear the wind blow
And did you know
Your Stairway lies on the whispering wind.”

Your head at every second of every day is humming with ideas of whatever. If we act on these ideas we do become the master of our own destiny. Also this is a call back to when the atheists and the evolutionists were calling out the faithful. The “Piper” is calling upon his people (Muslims ,Christians ,Buddhists etc…..) He’s also calling out to the non-faithful to also follow him. “Your Stairway lies on the whispering wind.” ,means that all with no faith you have no “stairway” to immortality. All that are with out faith ,are dust in the wind.
This could also be about the relatoinship between Aragorn and Arwen. Awen’s fater telling her that she will die if she does not leave for the Grey Heaven’s with her Elven kin. “Stairway lies on the whispering wind.” Her chance at immortality is fading and it is out weighted by her love of Aragorn.

“And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last
When all are one and one is all
To be a rock and nor to roll.”

Now for the last lines. These lines also have many meanings. The road is life ,sometime we make our selves out bigger than what we really are or better than what we really are. So our thoughts of ourselves out shine what we really are. Or our material good and social status are bigger than our immortal soul. Here is the other meaning. People go through a life of sin with never being forgiven so there sin out weights there soul. Another meaning ,the closer you are to a street light the smaller your shadow is ,the further you’re away from a street light the bigger your shadow. The shadow = sin before a higher power and the street-light = the higher-power. So the closer you are the higher-power the smaller your sin is. This could also be Frodo and Sam as they draw closer and closer to Mordor, where the shadows lie. As they got closer the journey became harder and darker, and the light Galadriel gave Frodo could be the light that is refered to. Also in the battle parts of the books the forced of Mordor bring a shadow across the battlefield. There is reappearance of the lady is not the same as in the beginning of the song. This lady is the “first lady of any religion”. (Frigga ,Mary ,Sheba ,Herra ,Aphrodite, Galadriel) And this lady is showing that all people have the chance to change at any moment. (Galadriel coming to Frodo in visions showing him that there is still hope) Again we have the appearance of gold. (Gold = immortality). So all people can get immortality whenever they want it ,if they are willing to do what is nesscrry. “When all are one and one is all.” This line has two meanings one ,you become one with the god of your faith ,or as from the eyes of an occultists; the Anti-Christ will bring about a modern day utopia in his own vision. “One to unite them and destroy them all.” (like the Ring of Power )“To be a Rock and not roll.” The last line of the song ,means that all without faith we roll on through the sands of time ,not remembered by any one. Without faith what is there? “Nothing.” But those who have faith in any religion become rocks and are remembered through immortality. With faith what is there? “Everything.”

“And she’s buying a Stairway To Heaven.”

Sorry for the length, but this is the rough draft for a literary analyst that I did last year in College English and it got me a pretty good grade. Please leave comments or rate, unless you’re a jerk that’s going to criticize me about the Lord Of The Rings or the Religion of the song…..you know who you are.

J.R.R. Tolkien = Greatest Writer
Led Zeppelin = Greatest Band
Tolkien + Zeppelin = Amazing

Plus, "The Hobbit" and "The Lord Of The Rings" Series are some of the best and most influencial works of written art; so it does make sense that Plant would be influenced by Tolkien's works.

Megadeth – The Hardest Part of Letting Go... Sealed with a Kiss Lyrics 14 years ago
Close on Poe's story, "The Cask of Amontillado." But a better fit would be Poe's "The Black Cat," since this story is about a woman that he killed and kept her in immurement in his celler. In "The Black Cat" the narriator kills out of rage, while in the "The Cask of Amontillado," the narriator kills out of revenge. I don't think this makes for a good love song. I would not recomend putting this song on a mix tape for a girl.

Nine Inch Nails – Something I Can Never Have Lyrics 14 years ago
This is a song that closely resembles "Hurt," as far as the meaning is concerned. It even has the same simple musical components as "Hurt." (Trent on vocals and piano) I don't think this is a song about drugs. I can relate, on several accounts, as to what this song means. It's about someone (his friends, his woman, or a family member. I like to think it is a woman) that won't forgive him for something that he had done in the past, and all he want is that person back in his life, (or atleast their forgivness) like in "Hurt."

The first line of the first verse is pretty much saying, he remembers all the tears he made this person cry; all the pain that he has caused. The next two lines are saying, he remember the good things and times that they had shared together. So in the last line, he has mixed feelings about this person, and all of these thought and mixed emotions are running through his head all at once. He hate and loves at the same time. (Been there done that)
The next verse says that this person had done so much good in his life. He thought really high of this person, and then this person cut him down for something that he had done. (as in my case) And when someone who you think high of beats you down it feels horriable. This is what happened to him. "This thing is slowly tearing me apart." - He feels awful about what he has done to this person. (and the fact that they cut him down afterwards didn't help any.) The last line of this verse is very dark, he has lost all compassion. You culd even go one step farther and say that he didn't want to get close to anyone because he was afraid the same thing would happen again. (Like in the end of "Hurt")

The last verse is by far the best of the song. I think he finally got his forgivness, but only out of pity. So "this place" would be the lie of a life that they are living. "Though it looks different now, I know it's still the same." - Nothing has changed. The person didn't truly forgive him. You can say I'm sorry, but not mean it, kind of like "sweet nothings." This person just said it out of pity for him. And for the last line, this person is nothing but a constant reminder of what he once was. This person will always hold the past above him, even if he has changed for the better.
The chours is simple if you understand the verses. "Come on and tell me." - Accept his apology, is what he is telling this person.
"You make this all go away." - All this person has to do is truly forgive him to end his mixed emotions of hate and love, and his own self-loathing. "I'm starting to scare myself." - He's afriad of what he has become. I think he wondering if he is truly a terriable person like the acusser thinks.

"I just want somethings I can never have." - His forgivness. He wants things (his relationship with this person) to be the way they once were, and he'll never get it aslong as they don't trly forgive him. (Like I said it's almost the same as "Hurt.")
