Hit the mail on the head. That's pretty much exactly how he explains the song on the DVD.

Get a hold of the aMotion DVD and watch it with Maynard's commentary. He explains every song on it. This song is about more than 3 people, 6 if I remember correctly.

Anathema – Barrel Lyrics 14 years ago
Correct title is Barriers. I think it's along the same line as Floyd's the wall. Meaning a barrier between himself and others (talking to you from the other side of a wall in my mind), sort of an anxiety thing (the fear overcame me) and his struggle to overcome it (I just can't lay down and die). That's the impression I get anyway.

Porcupine Tree – Trains Lyrics 14 years ago
According to SW the reference of Trains in his songs refers to how a sight, sound, smell etc, regardless of how insignificant it may seem can trigger memories or feelings etc. He says he used to live near a train line as a child and the sound of trains takes him back. I got this from the Insurgentes doco. I also recall SW saying In Absentia is about serial killers, which he has a fascination with. I think this was from the film as well, I can't remember.
