To me, there seems to be two different ways to interpret the song. The first being that the singer is writing about a close friend/relative who is going to die soon (which makes sense with the context of the rest of the album, esp. "Three Months"). They're saying that their body is going to die before their spirit, which indicates some sort of a disease. So the singer writes down all the things this person says so that they don't forget, but the words can't be spoken or else they lose all their meaning. Or, as is indicated by the last line, the singer will attach more meaning to the words than was intended. An alternative would be that their close friend/relative is simply leaving or breaking up with them. Doesn't seem to fit as well with everything else, but it's always an angle. |

I always assumed it was a sad song about a former lover. Especially after reading the lyrics (the part about the "lazy summer goddess" was hard for me to hear on my stupid laptop speakers) it seems like they're haunted by their lover's memory ("face stained in the ceiling", as in, you see their face staring at the ceiling at night). They're trying to dig up and kill the memories or feelings they had for this person, but you can't kill love (especially summer love? Or at least, I'm assuming it's a summer thing). So at the moment, they've found an escape or a way to not think about this person. But that's just what it means to me. |

It's about a man who was with a prostitute (who was either a close friend, or he fell in love with her) and is writing about his concerns for her... That, or something bad happened to her, and he's writing about how he regrets what happened ("your lower back haunts me every time I come", implying that he could have helped her out some how) "If they treat you rough in the evening, You'll be alright by the morning Why would you do this if it's so goddamned demeaning?" < She gets with a lot of men who beat her up/mistreat her, but possibly it's the only thing she can do? Either way, his feelings towards her (either physically or emotionally) are preventing him from moving on or from helping her out. |

"I'm preoccupied with *jealousy, thoughts of sodomy, practicalities" "I hope that I can *stomach this fleeting loneliness" (and I hate to nit-pick, but it's "Miss Anonymous, *I'm impressed by the way you carry yourself...") Also, this song is so good. It's one of my favorite songs of theirs. |

| I could be wrong but every time I've heard it performed, it sounds like he's saying "the parts you leave, you can't replace" | |
