Arcade Fire – The Woodlands National Anthem Lyrics 14 years ago
I looked it up. Here's what i found:

http://www.thewoodlands.com/index.php

"There is a sanctuary nestled deep inside a native forest. A natural refuge, unique in its beauty, diversity, convenience and comfort. A place that fosters the best in family life, career opportunities and neighborhood involvement. It began as one of America's first master-planned communities ans is now one of the finest. We call it The Woodlands. You can call it home."

I saw Arcade Fire in concert a couple months ago, and they opened with a video that was a mock advertisement for a planned community like this. The things the narrator said were basically the same. It seems like Arcade Fire is criticizing these communities that began as cookie-cutter houses during the baby boom after WWII. Just like you said, the8es, it's about living in a "perfect society" but feeling trapped there, like this is your entire world and there's no way to escape. I grew up in a small, safe, suburban neighborhood near to my school and I felt like I had no way to grow out of there, like I would be trapped forever. Anyways, I'm rambling...

Arcade Fire – Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains) Lyrics 14 years ago
This is the song that made me fall in love with Arcade Fire. It's about urban development. It's about finding meaning in a culture filled with inane and vapid entertainment. It's about the general population losing the motivation to do anything with their lives but become educated so they can get a job so they can make money so they can retire so they can die. It's about trying to find room to breathe in a culture that just wants you to be washed away in the torrent of conformity. It's about being beautiful and shining and dancing the way you want to dance and not worrying what anyone else thinks. I know I'm sounding pretty cliche here, but come on. Give me a break. I'm in love.

Wow, great analysis. I completely agree with everything you said, and I love this song's message. Just one thing: Win Butler was born in The Woodlands, Texas. Not exactly a few hours from San Francisco. However, this totally doesn't undermine your theory, because The Woodlands is a suburb of Houston, which is also a major metropolitan center. Just thought you'd like to know. Other than that, great job!
