jpwild240 has some great ideas about the potential meaning of the song, but I think he/she may have gone too deep into it. Bernard Sumner of New Order fame was the vocalist and he has said repeatedly that he never puts much thought into his lyrics, preferring to let his muse just take over and whatever comes out is what comes out. However, the youth thing is definitely a part of it, and may also explain the "moustache" bit. If you search for really old pictures of Bernard Sumner near the beginning of Joy Division (probably before they were called Joy Division), you'll eventually find pictures of him at the age of 18 sporting a really rather silly-looking moustache. In an FHM interview, he was asked about his moustache: Q: "And there was a 'tache at one point, wasn't there?" A: "Who f--king told you that? No, this is the new me... I'm going to admit to it. The thing is, I looked very young when I was 18 and they wouldn't let me in pubs. They wouldn't even let me in youth clubs. So, yes, I did have a bum-fluff moustache - one of those that don't quite meet in the middle because you haven't got enough testosterone running through your body. It looked like Noel's eyebrows, only on the lips." |
