Argh - it posted before I was done...

We would go and get 40's
Then wed go to some party
Oh really your folks are away now?
Alright I'm coming
Ill be right there.

So, they have fallen into a "friend" routine of hanging out, getting drunk, going to parties - same old thing, weekend after weekend.
But she mentions her folks are away - BAM! - he's not going to make the same mistake.

Whatever it means, I love it!!

I get a similar sense from this song... Melancholy for sure. I thought it might be about the regret of not acting on his feelings?

I always suspected that the first verse was about a missed opportunity to take the relationship further - he liked her, but fear held him back.
Fuck goin' to that party
Oh really, you're folks are away now?
Alright, lets go, you convinced me

So instead of going to her parent's house, knowing they would be alone, he opts to go the party with her.

at 12:51 (too late??) he realizes his fear cost him his chance?

Then in the second verse, I get the sense their relationship has stagnated a bit - as if he's accepted that he blew his chance. But at the suggestion of her parents being away, he jumps at his chance

Cake – Mexico Lyrics 14 years ago
"bound for mexico" - I wonder whether this suggests he thinks the relationship is "headed south," as in doomed to fail?

He just doesn't have the same intensity of feelings for the girl as she has for him. And it drives him away.

Cake – Mustache Man (Wasted) Lyrics 14 years ago
This is hands-down my favorite track on the new album... No earthly clue what it might mean however. Guess I'll just keep listening to it and maybe have an epiphany.

I'm intrigued by the refrain - which seems so in contrast to the verses... Hmmm.

Cake – Ain't No Good Lyrics 14 years ago
When I listen to this song, I imagine it is from the perspective of the celebrity musician - and the "pies in the carousel" refer to the female fans - flattering, eager, perhaps tempting, but "no good".

I even wonder whether the verses describe three different types of women - and not all the same person?
1. The eve-like ingenue - and the accompanying individual swinging in the tree of life trying to sell you on the great big lie I imagine to be the serpent. The red-headed gabriel she hands you could be the apple? Tempting, but disastrous.
2. The damsel in distress - the girl stuck in nowhere-ville with the go-nowhere guy spinning like a tractor-pull. She's looking for a way out, and someone to save her.
3. The celebrity groupie - the climber who's happy to show you off to her friends, use you to promote herself, and use your celebrity (feathers) to ascend another rung on the ladder? Then toss you aside for bigger game down the road...

When "her eyes light up", the flattery is thrilling... When the "music spills right into your cup", it's very exciting. "So abrupt, and so concise" - I wondered whether this referred to the touring lifestyle? You breeze in and out of towns, and how that avails itself to easy one night stands?

Who knows - that is just what I envision when I hear this song... Like a warning to keep some perspective and some distance from female fans.
