Also, I forgot to mention. The last line alludes to how the soldiers couldn't even remember there families or what they looked like. They would lose pictures of their family and would completely forget what they looked like because they would be gone for months or even years.

Lastly, the lyrics allude twice to that feeling of being a million miles from home. This was a feeling that was felt highly by the soldiers of WWI and WWII.

I also heard this song from the Assassins Creed Revelations trailer. But, I don't think the song is purely of the game.

I think the song is the perspective of a US soldier (or any other soldier for that matter) in either WWI or WWII during the cold winters. That feeling of being alone and left for dead is portrayed highly through the song. It's almost like a letter sent back to his family telling them of what he feels. The reason why I think it's this is because of the line "The sound of iron shucks stuck in my head" portrays Shell Shock Syndrome which many Veterans would experience. Also, the lyrics talk about it being very cold at times. This may also allude to the coldness of the German winter, or Northern European winter for that matter. The Winters there were so cold, their hands would burn. I read books and have seen movies where soldiers will be freezing while they aren't fighting, wrapping themselves up in any cloth possible.

Also, the beginning lyrics may describe D-Day. It's a bit out of the ballpark, and may not be correct, but the portrayal of innocence being burned in flames makes me think of D-Day when men were killed by the hundreds as they stormed the beaches and the waves slowly turned blood red.

The second stanza also brings this air of WWI/WWII-esk ideas, where they are ready to fight, or their fate.
