You posted this in 2011, so I'm assuming that by "last year" you meant 2010. The Nowak incident happened in 2007; the story certainly wouldn't be new by the time you went to that concert. Unless Ben was looking up some strange things, he wouldn't have come across the story; it had already died out.
Two other users have given accounts of Ben explaining part of the song at different concerts. Now, it'd be rather difficult to improvise something with the sort of meaning that he said the song had.
In summary: Don't try to kill everyone else's experience of the song. |

I have to agree with you. Ben's songs have this strange ability to put me in this really calm state; maybe it's his voice, but I digress. As soon as I hear "put on a pair of diapers", I'm jolted out of that calm. It's disruptive. |

This line really rings true for me. Even world peace seems easier to achieve than bringing divorced parents together, even for one birthday. I actually can't remember any birthdays where both of my parents were present. =/ |

I get where you're coming from. When I first heard this song, the first thing I thought about was my relationship with my Aspie boyfriend. I know, AS and bipolar are different things, but both cause people to be seen in a different light.
