I agree with your interpretation, and I'm pretty sure that the "You need to drown to know.", par is refering to the great flood, if im not mistaken. And to god we are "shmate" - Rubbish, Garbage, or Rags. Jesus is the one that truly loves us, but god loved us enough to create us and to send his son to earth. So in a certain light they're right, God does or did hate us. This song could be another bible referance, kinda like "The Beast and The Harlot".
