The Cars – Drive Lyrics 14 years ago
I've always had a hard time with this song, especially the line "You can't go on thinking nothing's wrong..."

Whatever the reason, the man is saying that something serious happened.

Since Ben Orr passed away, the song has a meaning to me outside of the video version. I had several relatives pass away around the same time, two of them with cancer. My relatives would tell me that everything would be okay, but I knew it wouldn't. Working in the medical profession, I see way too much sadness.

Just reading this thread is enough to bring me to tears.

The Cars – Sad Song Lyrics 14 years ago
One voice among many - forgive me if I take too long - but yes, this world has much sadness. This world is controlled by those who think like Mr. Hyde. In addition, there are so many who refuse to acknowledge our problems.

I looooooooooooove this song!!!

I sense this song has to do with war: joining on the bandwagon (i.e. watching Fox News), believing the garbage fed to the masses, and what is trendy to believe. Perhaps the person this song is addressed to is smart, yet this person does not want to be involved or help solve the problem.

I'd love to hear other interpretations, or comments from the artist! (I wish!)

And the only thing that changes are your shoes, happy or sad.

Right on. It's easy to let life get out of hand, but hard to pretend that everything is okay on the outside. It's dual life: angst in one, stoicism in the other.

The Cars – Down Boys Lyrics 14 years ago
Perhaps a short story on the second side of Panorama?

Anyone notice that this song precedes "Misfit Kid?" "Down Boys" seems to parallel this song, as the person in this song is pretty much labeled a pretender by the "Down Boys":

You were trying to be sharp
But they couldn't wait
You were trying to be eternal
But that didn't rate
You were trying to be smooth
You're rough on the edges
You were trying to be hysterical
They didn't laugh

The next song, "Misfit Kid" is when this person internally realizes and labels how he feels about himself.

In the setting of the remaining songs on this "side" of the album, it sounds like the fictional "person" has finally quit pretending and is confident of himself, yet he is still contacting the girl who "wears those eyes," a shallow-minded woman. In this case, the person lets her know that SHE'LL have to find him (instead of the reverse), although it should be no problem to find him.
