This song is a catchy one, and just a description of street scenes (maybe Bernie looking out of the window?). 'Cause the steams in the boiler the coals in the fire' suggests a writing energy, 'thorn of a rose' maybe refers to the pain of love songs, but they are coming out of is pen thick and fast!! |

This song encapulates the frustration of having to write songs for other people, as Elton and Bernie had to do...before they marketed their own demos and achieved success in America, then Britain. e.g. 'So churn them out thick and fast and we'll still pat your backs' refers to the stuffy and traditional attitude of those writers and publishers who didn't see eye to eye with what Bernie and Elton were working towards... |

Get real chaps...its not a gay song (Taupin lyrics), its a straight forward autobiographical account of their writing partnership. e.g. 'Too hot for the band...' when Elton left Bluesology. 'Hand in hand went music and the rhyme...'. It's hardly Rocket Man science is it?? |
