Why? – This Blackest Purse Lyrics 13 years ago
Agreed, but more specifically, perhaps the "blackest purse" is the gains, financial and otherwise, that he's made from said pose.

Why? – Into the Shadows of My Embrace Lyrics 14 years ago
I think you pretty much got it. I read the verses

"we found the dead fox, and a dozen matchbox cars, when we cut back the hedges on cortelyou place,
how many got lost left so long they grew moss 'cause they recoiled into the shadows of my embrace?"

a bit more literally. Given the earlier parts of the song, where he talks about his promiscuity so explicitly, I read "how many got lost" as referring to women he bonded with emotionally and actually slept with (as opposed to what your reading seems to be: people of both sexes who he bonded with emotionally) and then left behind.

Either way, he's concerned that he's been too reckless with his affection, that he'd unintentionally led people to believe that they could have a deeper and more lasting relationship with him.

Thee More Shallows – Monkey vs. Shark Lyrics 14 years ago
Excerpt from interview at http://www.bigtakeover.com/interviews/interview-thee-more-shallows-part-2-of-2 :

Is there an animal you most identify with?

KESLER: I’m most proud of “Monkey Versus Shark” because the whole relationship between them is something I actually I fantasized or thought about as a child. There are sexual overtones in it but it was pre-sexual when I thought of it. You know how in grade school you had to say what animal you were most like? I always thought of myself as the monkey and I had a friend who was a shark. It feels very very personal to me.
