But I wanted to add what's for me, the Christian/religious meaning to the song. The young man who died had a parent who prayed for him, and is confident that his/her son is forgiven and is going to heaven, even though the bad things he did cut his earthly life short. So it's a sad story, but filled with hope. (I am a Christian, so this hits home with my personal beliefs.) |

After reading the lyrics to this song, and it having been a favorite since childhood, I made up a story to go with it. It's about a young man who is representative of the Biblical prodigal son, and he dies young because of his waywardness and wrong choices. He may have: 1. been shot in a fight due to being involved in criminal activity, 2. committed suicide due to his drug/alcohol addictions or disappointment in life, or 3. faces execution for being involved as an accessory to a crime.
I can think of several real people from history who fit this situation to a tee, so whenever I hear this song I think of them. |

I love this song because it can be very healing to someone who has lost someone. He left it vague to whether or not it was a girlfriend, wife, or even a mother left behind. So the relationship could have been romantic, friendship or parent/child. Very powerful. |
