Elbow – Neat Little Rows Lyrics 14 years ago
And just to add about the music in this song, the "na na nas" in the chorus sound quite playful and childish, like it is a little kid singing it.

Also the strange sounds behind the " in the house where they grew you...." bit to me sound alot like there's a school playground a few streets away and all the kids are out doing thier thing. I don't know if anyone else gets that from it.

Elbow – Neat Little Rows Lyrics 14 years ago
Firstly this line "drown me now in doubt of ire, "
is "drown me now in down of eider"

I think this song is about a fairly young child, maybe about 5 years. First verse he talks about his favourite singer being packed away in it's box, not sure what was popular with the under fives thirty odd years ago, maybe elvis or something. It could be being put away just for the night or perhaps forever, since he's outgrown it.

The second verse sounds like a game of soldiers in the playground, he can't read the text because he's that young.

The chorus is refering to the way his parents have brought him up. Bones are the foundations of a person. Cobblestones are what old streets are made of, to lay his bones in the cobblestones is to be making the past part of him, awareness of his ancestors and history. Neat little rows may refer to attempts at bringing him up in a good and orderly way rather than scattered and chaotic.

Elbow – An Audience with the Pope Lyrics 14 years ago
So this is a 100% incorrect interpretation as this song is pretty much exactly as it says on the tin,
however I find it interesting to think of it in terms of an addiction, particularly to opiates.

The words pope and opium are very similar sounding and there are other well known connections between religeon and opium, also the music has a very smooth and smokey feel to it whitch fits well too.
All the lyrics go perfectly with this theme, mind you, in music, sex, drugs and religeon are all interchangeable concepts. One thing can easily be about another, and often is.

Elbow – High Ideals Lyrics 14 years ago
To me this song seems mainly political in nature.
The first verse refers to stopping and thinking about previously held ideas or opinions, taking a chair meaning to sit down, on the battlefield.Probably not a literal one, but it could be.

Second verse is talking about this bayonett. An old weapon, or grudge. Made in the USA meaning that's where where the idea of the fight originated, probably due to favours in the first or second world war. This was a long time ago and all the people involved in those conflicts are dead but it is still affecting the uk and the decisions that are made, the attitude is passed down though generations like a wedding ring.

Last verse is maybe to sooth himself, after all these are big big problems No one can really solve, so maybe stop worrying about it so much.... Think about beauty and love instead.
