Prince – Purple Rain Lyrics | 11 years ago |
In Purple Rain Prince is involved in an intense relationship (clearly shown by the way he sings it). The relationship has problems (“I never meant to cause you any sorrow, I never meant to cause you any pain”) but is intense. When he first met her he knew that he would fall in love with her but he persuaded himself that he just wanted to enjoy spending a bit of time with her (“I only wanted to one time to see you laughing”) and Purple Rain is the place where he sees them enjoying their time together (“Bathing in the purple rain”). It’s a beautiful place but it isn’t real. He doesn’t just want sex with her (“I never wanted to be your weekend lover”). He wants more. He tries to convince himself that he just “wanted to be some kind of friend” but deep down he always knew that he wanted more. She’s clearly in a relationship with someone else (“Baby, I could never steal you from another”) and he’s already tried to finish it for that reason (“It's such a shame our friendship had to end”). In the end he lets his heart rule his head (“Honey, I know, I know, I know times are changing and it's time we all reach out for something new, that means you too. You say you want a leader but you can't seem to make up your mind. I think you better close it and let me guide you to the purple rain” (the place which is in his mind, a beautiful place, where they can be together but which he knows deep down isn’t real). Great song. |
U2 – Mofo Lyrics | 12 years ago |
That quote is from French philsopher Pascal. I like what you said about the lyrics. I think also, that it's about trying to find God (often in the wrong places) - "looking for baby Jesus under the trash", "Looking in the places where no flowers grow". |
Prince – Tamborine Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Tamborine - a shallow drum with only one skin, played on with the hand, and having bells at the sides. A great instrument but very limited when played by itself. Prince is singing to a girl in a magazine while playing his tamborine. He's not interested in the hassle of juggling one night stands; he is staying at home playing his tamborine. |
U2 – Love Is Blindness Lyrics | 13 years ago |
WHAT DO YOU THINK? CORINTHEANS 13 WHICH BONO HAS QUOTED IN OTHER SONGS SAYS: “LOVE IS KINDNESS...” AMONGST OTHER THINGS. I THINK BONO HAS LOOKED AT THE WORLD AND THOUGHT — THAT’S WHAT LOVE IS SUPPOSED TO BE BUT PEOPLE HAVE MISTAKEN LOVE FOR SEX: Love is blindness I don't want to see Won't you wrap the night Around me Oh my heart Love is blindness = PEOPLE WANT SEX, NOT LOVE In a parked car In a crowded street You see your love Made complete Thread is ripping The knot is slipping Love is blindness = SEX IN THE BACK OF A CAR Love is clockworks And cold steel Fingers too numb to feel Squeeze the handle =LOVE IS MECHANISTIC, PEOPLE’S HEARTS HAVE BECOME HARD/NUMB Blow out the candle Love is blindness = THEY DON’T WANT TO SEE THE TRUTH A little death = A PHRASE USED FOR ORGASM Without mourning = NO REGRETS/FEELINGS No call = SPONTANEOUS And no warning Baby...a dangerous idea That almost makes sense Love is drowning In a deep well All the secrets And no one to tell Take the money Honey Blindness = FOR SOME PEOPLE SEX IS NO LONGER ABOUT LOVE Love is blindness I don't want to see Won't you wrap the night Around me Oh my love Blindness |
The Alarm – Blaze Of Glory Lyrics | 13 years ago |
It's funny how they shoot you down When your hands are held up high And you open up your heart and soul But that's not enough for most. LIFE IS TOUGH/UNJUST I remember this much There is nothing You shouldn't speak of If you got something to say And there is no one To be scared of Just get them out of the way DON'T GIVE UP Going out in a blaze of glory My heart is open wide You can take anything that you want from me there is nothing left to hide SUBMIT TO GOD Going out in a blaze of glory my hands are held up high I'm learning how to hit back I'm learning how to fight I'M LEARNING HOW TO OVERCOME THE DEVIL The law of the jungle says You look after yourself But I remember this much I love as I've been loved myself. IT'S NOT ABOUT LOOKING AFTER NUMBER ONE; IT'S ABOUT LOVE Don't forget what I told you now When the question keeps on coming And it's "How much more can you take" When they've ripped your clothes to pieces "Shouldn't you be gone by now" THE ROMANS GAMBLING OVER JESUS' CLOTHES But you keep on Going out in a blaze of glory Setting your sights for the sky. GOD They can offer you anything at all But your dreams must not be sold. THE DEVIL OFFERED CHRIST EVERY WORLDY THING BUT HE DIDN'T BUY IT Going out in a blaze of glory No price is high enough I'm fighting back with feeling I'm fighting back with love When the nails are biting into your hands And the cross is heavy on your heart Now is the time to really make a stand My hands are held up high THE CRUCIFIXION Fighting back with love Fighting back with love! No price is high enough To take my soul, to take my soul To take my soul JESUS SACRIFICED EVERYTHING HE HAD TO TAKE MY SOUL |
U2 – Pride (In the Name of Love) Lyrics | 13 years ago |
I think it means pride as in dignity. "They took your life but they could not take your pride". Even though MLK faced violence and hatred he always fought back with love, praying for those who used him badly (keeping his dignity). Great song. |
U2 – I Threw A Brick Through A Window Lyrics | 13 years ago |
This is one of my favourite songs lyrically. He feels like his life has no direction... The window symbolises his old life, old ideas. He's breaking his old life and taking "another way out of here". Similar idea to the Bruce Cockburn lyrics that Bono quotes in later years : "I'm gonna kick the darkness 'til it bleeds daylight". The quote from Jesus surely points to new spiritual direction. |
