| Tom Waits – Return of Jackie & Judy (The Ramones cover) Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| this is "on the road" another song by tom waits off his orphans: bastards album. | |
| Tom Waits – Rains on Me Lyrics | 13 years ago |
amazing song probably about a 'grey skies depression' which religion can't seem to fix (the valley to pray), drugs (powders and fix), alcohol (got drunk), running away (to argyle and dix) or even apocalyptic chaos (forty monkeys drowning in a boiling sea) but one error the line should be: "We're all God's children, can't you see?" instead of "All God's chilluns can't you see?" |
| Tom Waits – Chicago Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| also with elements of the american dream concept | |
| Tom Waits – Chicago Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| typical 'grass is greener on the other side' song. still very good though | |
| Tom Waits – Hell Broke Luce Lyrics | 14 years ago |
love the song and love the pun - hell broke loose (phrase for total chaos) - hell broke luce (iraq is hell, it broke luce to suicide) but the whole combination of the growl, the rhythm, the sound effects, this song haunts you |
| Tom Waits – Kommienezuspadt Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| this song was in a play called alice, which was loosely based on alice in wonderland. i assume then that this is a reference to the white rabbit | |
| Tom Waits – Chocolate Jesus Lyrics | 14 years ago |
commercialization of easter as a symbol of christianity? but the addiction thing makes sense as well |
| Tom Waits – God's Away on Business Lyrics | 14 years ago |
the original song was "killers, thieves and whores" in the play woyzeck (where the blood money album comes from). whores was replaced with lawyers for the studio version. still very funny though |
| Tom Waits – Come on Up to the House Lyrics | 14 years ago |
its a song about death: "come on up to the house" is a reluctant grim reaper beckoning a dying man to come up to heaven. its soothing, but eerie in a kinda beatiful, waits-ian way! death seems graceful.... other lines suggest this too: Well the moon is broken And the sky is cracked (the grim reaper is like an angel of death, coming from the heavens above) The only things that you can see Is all that you lack (everything you see is now gone, coz you're dead and coming off this earth All your cryin don't do no good (there is no resistance to it) Come down off the cross We can use the wood (talking to jesus before his death) The world is not my home I'm just a passin thru Come on up to the house (earth is not his home, he just passes through to collect his bill) There's no light in the tunnel (this is the end, the cut-off for your life) Does life seem nasty, brutish and short (on one's deathbed, one finally understands the finite nature of life and mortal man) The seas are stormy And you can't find no port (a ship at sea sinking, captain about to die) There's nothin in the world (this world is meaningless to you now coz you're dead) there's nothin in the world that you can do (its inevitable to all mortal men) and you been whipped by the forces that are inside you (death drive within everyone pushes them to live life, but now death is here it seems to backfire) well you're high on top of your mountain of woe (grief before departing this world) well you know you should surrender but you can't let go (its hard to let go of life, but you must release and come up to heaven) |
| Tom Waits – November Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| i have no-problems with no-vember (the month or the song) | |
| Tom Waits – Pony Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| haha i'm also 17 and i love tom waits!!! | |
| Tom Waits – Ruby's Arms Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| kinda similar to what you said; because this song comes right after mr siegal (on heartattack and vine), i always imagined it as him lying, dying after being shot and he finally begins to regret his actions. or maybe one of siegal's victims as a flipside of the previous song | |
| Tom Waits – Goin' Out West Lyrics | 14 years ago |
its alluding to holden caufield from 'the catcher in the rye' who is lonely, unappreciated and wants to get out somewhere. so he plans to go out west to california and start a new life, not to die like some people suggest. still an amazing song!!! |
| Tom Waits – What Keeps Mankind Alive? Lyrics | 14 years ago |
small thing, isn't it "And for once you must try not to shrink the facts" amazing song, waits' depiction of it is fantastic |
| Tom Waits – Black Wings Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| black wings is the ultimate avenger. everyone who has ever crossed him has been screwed over, but he'll save an innocent baby from drowning | |
| Tom Waits – Starving in the Belly of a Whale Lyrics | 14 years ago |
obviously alluding to jonah, who was stuck in a whale's bellows for 3 days for sinning. in the same way, our bad deeds have got us starving (in a metaphorical sense of course) where we are. fits in really well with the rest of the blood money album |
| Tom Waits – Way Down in the Hole Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| i think "the devil" is a metaphor for the bad things that happen in our life. we gotta keep it down in the hole so we only get good, enjoyable things | |
| Tom Waits – Semi Suite Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| i think its about a woman who has a truck-driver husband who she doesn't get to see. kinda heartbreaking | |
| Tom Waits – Spare Parts I (A Nocturnal Emission) Lyrics | 14 years ago |
isn't the first line "well the DAWN cracked hard just like a bull whip" ??? i think its about sunday morning after partying hard on a saturday night. very waits-esque |
| Tom Waits – Diamonds & Gold Lyrics | 14 years ago |
i think its also about how they'll leave everyone behind to chase their fortunes "all his disciples, they shave in the gutter / and they gather whats left of his clothes" |
| Tom Waits – Sins of My Father Lyrics | 14 years ago |
i always thought that the song was about abel. his parents committed the original sin and his brother cain was the first murderer; yet he ended up dead as a burden of their sins. also waits makes heaps of references to cain and abel in his songs, its like a recurring symbol! |
