When I listened to this song the first time, I thought how haunted the narrator telling the story must be. His voice is heavy with regret but not because he could not save 'her' from someone else. I think he succumbed to his inner demons and is undergoing a psychosis where he is splitting within himself, devolving into the killer that he fear he is becoming. That is why the song ends with 'her' being alive in spite of his actions. The last rock, as all the rocks symbolize him trying to fight off his urges... which he was unable to overcome. |
