| I like the idea of this song subverting the usual boy-meets-girl type ones. | |

"girls will be boys and boys will be girls, it's a mixed-up, muddled-up, shook-up world except for Lola" This bit I think is about the fact that even though Lola is trans* he doesn't care, as this was a time of fluid sexuality and fluid gender identity. And I heard an interview where someone asked why this club had champagne that tasted like cherry cola. Ray Davies's response? "It rhymed"! XD |

| 'alone here in the kitchen' and 'she won't write a letter' suggest to me that he's by himself without the kid, and that the mother isn't letting him see the daughter? | |

| I'd wondered about the 'phone as it would be weird to give an actual dog an actual bone in someone else's house. My conclusion had just been 'it's there because it rhymes!' though (this is my conclusion with most songs I don't understand), so the idea of an innuendo is interesting. | |

@stoolhardy, William Tell is the one who (supposdely) shot the apple off someone's head, so with all the other innuendo in the song, I'm wondering if it's some sort of witticism about him having good aim nudge nudge wink wink. Though then that reminded me of the famous William Tell Overture of classical music, and I wondered if it was to do with that. Which could be to do with the way the music builds as some sort of sexual reference, or in @uncomplicated's version then it would just be a reference to how kids like to dress up as chivalrous knights. |
