First of all nearly all of the founding father were deist. Meaning that while the believed in God, they believed that the laws of the universe were immutable and that God does not answer prayer. Adams, Jefferson, and Franklin all have some particularly harsh quotes regarding religion that you can look up. The first amendment was put into place because the fathers understood that as a nation of immigrants. The U.S. was and would continue to become more and more diverse in beliefs. The idea that without God there is no basis for good and evil is flawed at best. Especially when you consider the atrocities committed in the name of God by virtually every sect and denomination. This song is all about how building your morality on the concept of an afterlife robs life of it's beauty and turns it into a cruel test. My favorite verse is "Often times we may be wonder what we're supposed to do Stand and deliver or see the conflict through And as we long and proceed to build our castles in the sky Our plans get confounded and determination dies" To me it pretty much sums up the confusion caused by faith. |
