Right here goes my depiction of the meaning of the song line by line, the first line saying "You cool your bed-warm hands down on the broken radiator" the point in this is cooling your "bed warm hands" suggests that they are very close and also the fact that she COOLS them on the radiator is irony as radiators are used to heat things up but not in this case as the radiator is broken which could be a slight metaphor for some kind of friendship that has been broken? The next three lines are purely an indicator of the closeness of the couple. Now the chorus is interesting because it seems to tie in with the first line meaning of two people being friends but now they are something more: "Crack the shutters open wide, I wanna bathe you in the light of day" shutters are used to close things, keep the thing that people might want separate from them, so when he says "crack the shutters open wide" perhaps this is a metaphor for friends becoming more than friends, overcoming that barrier perhaps. The rest of the chorus talks about day light, baring in mind this whole "scene" is based in the morning daylight is new and brings life so therefore the daylight may well be further imagery for a new life being born, eg a new relationship forged? "It's been minutes, it's been days, it's been all I will remember Happy lost in your hair and the cold side of the pillow Your hills and valleys are mapped by my intrepid fingers And in a naked slumber, I dream all this again" This verse is very interesting as the first line suggests that this is something that this person has wanted for a very long time, either that or as I suspect it's about him dreaming about a friend who he loves dearly and as more than a friend and saying "It's been minutes, it's been days, it's been all I will remember" suggests losing track of time like in a dream, the next two lines after are just showing how close he believes he is to the person, the last line could be showing that he is in fact dreaming all of this or it could be showing how he is relishing this new relationship and it is almost too good to be true so he perseves it as a dream..? This is my depiction anyhow, feel free to disagree ha. |

| Anyone who knows rise agaist will know that this band is suttle, they don't just shout out what the song is about in the lyrics like some people seem to think(nothing to do with a personal encounter with a girl, although you make of it what you want), no this song is much deeper. I think youl find this song is about forgiveness. It is made much clearer in the video and also the lyrics, although the lyrics maybe slightly misleading in terms of what the band is trying to get across. The elephant(which is the symbol for the republican party) is apparently bullying the polar bear (which is the endangered species) in the mosh pit at the start of the video, later on the polar bear spots the elephant limping along, the polar bear stops the bus and helps the elephant, this is a symbol of forgiveness. This is the visual. If you listen to the lyrics carefully with hti meanign in mind you'l find that it all makes perfect sense, thank you:D | |
