I agree that's a great analysis, I just thought about the "poetic pick-up line" how can she bathe in a birdbath, it's obviously too small but she does bathe. So I thought birdbath as in bird - another male term for a woman. |

I think it means giving yourself to someone, sexually, which is precious because its "the crystal light that sleep between my thighs". But its also hoping the person will look after them - take them inside, give them a place to hide and cry etc. She is giving her sex to someone, but hoping they will cherish it and care for her. |

This is my interpretation only, but to me this song is about loving someone who has depression and how hard that is. "Skinny love" is the endearing name for the lover but also shows their illness, "just last the year" begs them to stick around and not do anything stupid. The chorus is what you tell the person you love to try and make them sane - especially "I told you to be fine." "What happened here" is when skinny love has been found hurting themselves, which relates to the "sink of blood". Skinny love tells their lover to "cut all of the ropes and let me fall" - fall into depression, stop trying to save them: sometimes depression makes people push away those who love them most. The final "who will love you? Who will fight?" is begging skinny love to stop pushing him away, let him love and protect her - who else will? |
