This soap opera is about a married couple slowly growing apart. Mario works the night shift at a bar. Maria works the day shift at a warehouse. They never have time for sex or romance. One night, Mario comes home early and finds Maria making out with another man in front of their house. Both men engage in a battle of knives, Mario gets killed. Maria lies to the police, claiming Mario was robed and killed by junkies. Thus, Mario gets stabbed 3 times: first in the forehead by Maria's betrayal; then in the heart by Maria's lover; and last by the false report in the news. The tragic ending with media references reminds me of another song involving knives written by Ruben Blades (Pedro Navaja). |

This song is a fable. The lion and the fish argue about who is happiest. The little fish envies the king of the animals, while the big lion envies the fish's freedom to swim away. Despite their differences, they board Noah's arc to survive the flood. The moral of the story is obvious, all humans must come together if we want to survive. Short and sweet! |

| Mecano – El Peon Del Rey De Negras Lyrics

This song uses the game of chess as a playful metaphor for racial and class warfare. The author calls himself "el peon de negras" (black pawn) and describes his struggle on the board against the white army to become the king's pawn. Despite all his victories, he is still a pawn and the only way to freedom is revolution. He also notes that if he is taken out of the "game" (i.e. life), we should not mourn because there are no social classes or racial segregation in the afterlife. |

| Mecano – Solo Soy Una Persona Lyrics

This one is somewhat cryptic, not the classic storytelling Mecano song. Written in first person, the author keeps explaining what he/she is not: a machine, a fish, a car, a flower, a rat, a can, etc. I am only a person (solo soy una persona) repeats the chorus, neither male nor female. This last part suggests the author is struggling with sexual identity as well as existential anxiety. It is also a statement of free will, I choose to define myself rather than letting others define me. |

Two best friends who are playboys, living their merry lives conquering every woman like a fortress (morro) to be taken by pirates. They plunder and take what they want (i.e. sex) over and over, plotting their next conquest with abandon. In the end, they realize that lasting love cannot be captured without being conquered by it. The last verse "para agarrar, hay que soltar" is an old expression, meaning "to hold on, you have to let go." |

| Mecano – No Pintamos Nada Lyrics

Flashback to the Cold War, east versus west keep threatening the world with nuclear holocaust. Spain is stuck in the middle of the battlefield but no one asks for their opinion. The expression "no pintamos nada" is a metaphor for being invisible, like a "fly on the wall" that no one pays notices. The song does not try to take political sides, just to express a sense of impotence felt by many youth during the cold war. |

Another short story turned song by Mecano, two passionate lovers separated by tragedy. Ana is so beautiful, even the ocean is jealous of her lover Miguel, who is a fisherman. Miguel goes out on his boat an drowns during a storm caused by the jealous waters. Ana never loses hope and keeps waiting for Miguel by the shore, turning into a statue of salt. The waves crashing onto her are caused by Miguel, trying desperately to escape the ocean's grip (i.e. death) to rejoin his beloved one. The imagery is so poetic! |

| Mecano – Una Rosa Es Una Rosa Lyrics

This article includes multiple song lyrics, but my post is about the first one "A Rose is a Rose" which is another favorite Mecano song. I particularly love the play of words like "amar" (to love) is the beginning of "amargura" (bitterness). Another word play is "rosa" (rose) is the beginning of "rosario" (rosary). In the roman catholic faith, praying the rosary is one way of erasing your sins and be closer to heaven. The word "rosa" is also a popular female name in Spanish. The layers of meaning just go on and on... classic Mecano! |

My favorite Mecano song of all time! The story of a gypsy woman who makes a Faustian deal with the moon to get the man she loves in exchange for her first born. The moon delivers her part of the deal, but in a cruel twist, the gypsy's lover kills her out of jealousy after seeing the first born does not look gypsy at all. He abandons the newborn in the woods, and the moon ends up taking care of the baby. Most Mecano songs are like short stories, but this one is one of the best. |
