Great song, lyrically and instrumentally...it keeps conjuring images right through of vampires...think it would be a great song for a really dark vampire movie...seems like a vampire at conflict between her new-found habit & nature and her residual human feelings...which could relate to the type of conflict a suicidal person experiences, not sure ... Love the sound and tempo, the lyrics are superb...classic U2...favourite song of the latest album...Bono generally has fairly simple messages in his song with really beautiful imagery and words....the message here i think is simple, LOVE and leave everything else to GOD... It is scientifically accepted that earth will out-survive humanity, as imposing as we considers ourselves to be, we have barely scratched her epidermus and she has barely retaliated in restoring balance. Along with the message that humanity will not change the course of the earth drastically, the real beauty of the song is imagery of beauty over power. I believe the religious references in inconsequential in this song, it's a simple song about the above 2 messages, she will outlive us (she rules until the end of time) and her beauty & power is magnificent, something to be adored....can't wait for my daughter to listen to this song! |

I love the power of this song....from the really restrained opening to the controlled vocal explosion over the 'gentle' instrumental build-up..i was quite certain this song was a woman's vengeance to her abusive partner, but enjoyed reading Bluecod's post and come to the conclusion that it's a woman's vengeance of having to abort her child and the frequent views of the aborted child... & she's a killer & she's a keeper ... [contradictory statements, but the first line is from the view of the aborted child that she is a killer and the second from her partner who probably gave her an ultimatum of aborting or breaking up and now considers her a "keeper"] am i blurry in your vision was i just a poor decision [aborted child asking if when conceived, was it not a consideration or just turned out to be a burden/bad decision that needed to be reversed] cut me open with precision & we'll finger the incision [the mother describing the abortion process, specically how unreal, humiliating, etc it is] tell me what have i done (quid pro quo) [the mother's realisation that it wasn't the right thing to do, she immediately fills with regret, hurt, pain...and soon to be the fuel for her vengeance] to watch you lose control [that she didn't make the right decision for herself, her body and her child] (tunnel) i will give you sanctuary in these hymns of Thanatos ... i will give you sanctuary! [the vocal expression and the lines themselves conflict, this to me is the mother's expression of how even the excuse that the aborted baby is not in pain and in a better place angers her knowing what just happened, i.e. she aborted the baby...and so even santuary in death cannot console her, as rational as it is...and from here, the song and vengeance builds up] v2. you want to see me burn i am living fire! I think it's a fantastic song, the anti-war sentiment cliche's are used, but beautiful arranged with flawless energy and certainty by Otep...instrumentally, it's a POWER HOUSE song which needs a vocal performance to match it...and it definitely does it...i love the change of pace of the song while maintaining a consistent build up and the layers of sound...definitely not hurt by the video... My interpretation is that it's definitely anti-war and anti-capitalism...but the real message is to take a feverish stand, and contributing personally to opposing war and capitalism to a degree... |

My interpretation is slightly different, although i think anyone that regrets a break-up can relate to it lyrically. To me it's a person pleading to themself to make a change, specifically...to love themself. Heaven is this reference point of material wealth, status and stature...and achieving all this, the singer realises that 'heaven' is a lie, they are not only unhappy but see something wrong with every aspect of their life that will lead to their decay and realising that being happy and loving one's self is the only way to achieve freedom and happiness... |

Agree with all the comments, love BlackVeiledBride's detail of her personal story, i feel the emotion and conflict u go through when u just talk to him. Similar to many great love songs, the song describes the emotion and conflict of being in love. It's contradictory and irrational for the 'outside' world, but love is not rational. The point i really wanted to make is that it doesn't need to necessarily have to be a bad relationship, the main factor is how much in love the singer is with this person, that alone is enough to torture him...the fact that he cannot set any boundaries in the relationship...he would do anything for this person and acknowledging this is torturing him...an analogy is a morally sound person falling this deeply in love with a beautiful person that is married, the conflict of his moral belief's and his love..and the subject of the song, the emotional surrender to love that is not right... |

Perfectly interpreted "rocknow"....i agree completely, there's a U2 line that goes "A victim or a vampire, depends on who is around" which summarises the song and your intepretation. I have also experienced loving and giving to a person that was only capable of taking and populating her narcisstic world without giving back. And you always believe that you just need to give a little more for her to turn the corner, but her world never fills, it's a bottomless pit that eventually swallows all those around her. The singer is almost there, but is about break free "I'm not the one to save you...", which is the most difficult thing for a man to say to a woman...but really understandable once you've gone thru this... |

I believe this is a really simple song. It describes the point where a person is at conflict between emotionally being driven by lust, love and self-indulgence and rationally knowing that they only living in a LIE. And the song takes place at the moment of impact between acknowledging both.... A simple analogy would be a drug addict that believes he has control over his habit that satisfies his social, sexual and emotional needs...but he knows he is slipping, he cannot continue the habit without accepting it's all a lie... |

This song is definitely a story of liberation, the lyrics are too powerful to relate to a single event or 'story' and as i intepreted for "Angels", it's the personal story of every listener about the point where they decided to stand their ground. Lyrically, it's the realisation that there is no options except to 'stand your ground' or give up totally(e.g. suicide). The song doesn't delve into the latter, but presents a set of emotions at the point where the decision has been made to face the truth, the challenges, the fears, etc. The song almost entirely describes the sense of relief and strength that is driven by the decision. The relief that that "it" won't continue following , growing, haunting you... The line really open to interpretation is "If I don't make it, someone else will", to me... every fear, challenge and problem has a vampire and a victim, so if u don't make it, if u don't fight it, then the vampire will make it...and that's not an option and hence "Stand my ground, i won't give in" immediately follows. Think of financially struggles, someone gets your assets or u get to keep it....struggling at work, someone will take it and replace you, or u fight for it and keep it...it's always a fight..even if the fight is against yourself... |

I love this song even tho I mostly listen to classic and trash metal, I just can't seem to rationalise why i love WT, but very little in love flows along the course of reason, which is the foundation of my interpretation...lyrically, it's both simple and complex, illustrated beautifully in a video that shares the sentiment through an 'unrelated' story. The story is a personal one, one about *YOU*... and your "sparkling angel" that saved then deceived and hurt you. The one that was there when you needed him/her to protect you only not to follow through protecting you forever which is part of the package, which relates to the "deceived me right from the start". "It was all a lie" is an extreme statement and driven by emotion as most of the song including the following line "Could have been forever" which is contradictory to the latter yet both true, which comes back to the statement that love is difficult to rationalise. The only really rational line in the song is "Now that we reached the end...", where through all the turmoil, you realise that this is the 'conclusion'. The angels you lead to their door, is the consequences to the 'abuser' of not being completely true to the end... one is obviously that the 'abuser' will have to live without you, will live knowing u see them in a different light, etc. And the line "The world may have failed you" is the reference to excuses 'abusers' make after treating someone wrong.... I know there's a definite someone that I still see as an angel and i wish I could understand her reasons for her actions, but no reason will suffice...so in the end...all i know is that "we reached the end..." and i'm glad they ended a really emotional song with the only line of possible reason... This is my first contribution, it's fairly early in the morning and I didn't bother reviewing, so apologies if the flow, grammar or spelling is not particularly good. |
