My interpretation, he means 'grace' literally - "unmerited divine assistance given humans for their regeneration or sanctification"...I do not mean this religiously, I know Dave has stated he is agnostic....he lost his love and now he is depressed and lonely and feels he will never love again...at least that is how I feel right now, so that is how I hear it :( So, he drinks himself into a stupor to stop thinking about it. You quoted a line that contradicts your premise. "never shot at a living thing" It is simply about a guy who has a gun to feel powerful or cool. From Wikipedia - "Glorified G" is an anti-gun song with lyrics mocking gun enthusiasts. The song was inspired by an incident in which drummer Dave Abbruzzese told the band he had just bought two guns which sparked a conversation about guns within the band. Vocalist Eddie Vedder about "Glorified G": I didn't actually write that song...I was at a band rehearsal and just started writing down these things the guys were talking about. The band were having this conversation and I just took down the dialogue. One of the band members had just bought a gun. It was the drummer, actually. I think you have it...spot on! Dreaming in "red" is her thinking about killing him...and I do think it is more than just "falling out of love"...he is clearly an abuser...perhaps physically, but definitely emotionally. "It's four o'clock, it's got to stop" - he is coming home again from doing whatever (cheating, drinking, gambling, neglecting her, etc.) |

My Ex does this my kids...they cannot like things she doesn't...if she is afraid of dogs, well, so are the kids. She will tell them, "watch out...don't pet that dog...they all bite". Well, guess what, my kids are deathly afraid of dogs eventhough none of them have ever had a bad experience with dogs. That is a literal example, while there are many "fears" that Mother can project that are more subtle...fear of commitment, fear of 'outiders', fear of not being good enough. |

It doesn't get any deeper than this...it is clearly a song about "Pink's" Mother (literally, but also his girlfriends, teachers, peers, wife, employer, government, society, etc) and her shaping his attitudes, feelings and responses until they match hers...they all play a part, but it is the foundation that his Mother provided that allowed everything to unfold the way it did)...your Mother (or mother figure) shapes your expectations early on...she is also 'stuck' behind her wall. We all build 'walls' to protect us...but many take it too far and build the wall "so high' that they become a prisoner within. Watch the movie...start to finish...this analysis is dead on. |
