haha, i have that line tattooed on my lower back! ;) we can match a little bit. as an ex junkie i agree with pretty much everything you said. it speaks to me greatly. i think the song is actually about meth, since it was his drug of choice, but heroin works just fine with the lyrics. also, i saw them back in 2005 and again shortly after artwork came out. the first time i saw them was the best concert of my life (plus, 30 seconds to mars opened for them, so it was a double win!) they're an amazing live band when they want to be, but burt doesn't scream as much as he used to, which is a shame because he has an amazing scream. i suppose his vocal chords can only handle so much each tour, haha. |

this is easily the best song ever written about the struggle of drug addiction and getting sober. it's intense, heavy, raw, and real. it makes perfect sense if you've "been there." the only lyrics people struggle to understand in this song is "white it out like glittering wax butterflies," which i actually have tattooed on my lower back. i read another comment on here that i think explains it best, but i'll try to restate it here. "white it out" = when you use white out, it covers something up or erases it, but you can still sort of see through it. "like glittering wax butterflies" = something beautiful and amazing you think is real, but is actually fake/imitated. when you put them together, i think bert is trying to say that he's trying to cover up or erase his past drug addiction, but by doing that he would be like taking something real (butterfly) and turning it into something fake (glittering wax butterfly). hopefully, that makes some sense to yall. it's the first question i'd ask him, if i ever met him, so if i ever do, i'll post it on here immediately. |

Every song can have multiple interpretations for the lyrics. You can make up a personal meaning, or it can be plain fact -- from the band members' mouths. I think this one is pretty obvious, personally. It's a story of the band making a name for itself. It starts out where they're like, "is it even worth it? we're not making money. no one knows who we are. we're stuck in this town, and everything is staying the same." As the lyrics continue, we read of hope and not giving up. The rest of the song is about finally making it, being on the top of the world, loving it, savoring it, and wanting their fans to stay there with them as long as they can. |

I agree with a few different people. I think many of their songs just shouldn't even be translated because they're much more beautiful in Icelandic, or whatever Icelandic spin-off language they use. Secondly, I think this song is about birth, but more specifically REbirth. The great thing about music is that there are often many interpretations for the lyrics. Anyway, I think this song was so appropriately used during the final scene of the US version of Queer as Folk s02e02. It's an absolutely beautiful song, as are most of their songs. |

Also, the reason yall may be getting a religious feel from the song is because the 12 steps are actually very intertwined with God and spirituality. Go ahead and google the 12 steps of AA, and you'll see what i mean. For example: "with heaven's help, you cast your demons out." AA step 3: "made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of god as we understood him." basically saying that recovering addicts turn to the power of God (heaven) to restore them to sanity (cast your demons out).
it's much easier to understand the song once you've been in the program. |

I totally see how many of you are coming to the religious conclusion; however, the album is called 13th Step, which is an inside joke in AA(NA or any other anonymous group that follows the 12 steps); therefore, i would tend to think that all songs are related to recovery/addiction. Also, in AA, there is a term called "pink cloud." It's used to reference the period of time after detox in the beginning of sobriety where everything seems perfect. I think the song is about Maynard confronting someone who has been working the program, but has not come down from that "pink cloud" and has not dealt with step 9, making amends. ... and how eventually, he or she will slip off that cloud, and the things the person did during the addiction to hurt others, will eventually cause the person to be overcome by guilt.
even if i'm a bit off, i can promise you that the song is about addiction/recovery.. that's what makes this whole album so personal and amazing to me. i can relate to every song. it's absolutely heart wrenching and beautiful. |
