| The Libertines – Albion Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| Albion is an ancient name for England. The legend is that Albion, giant son of Poseidon, founded a kingdom of giants on the island. In the prophetic book Jerusalem William Blake saw Albion as a primordial Eden. Albion is the greatness of England while the violence and alienation are consequences of England's violent colonial history. I grew up with my Birmingham born grandfather telling me all the reasons he left England for the US. Pete is trying to find some dignity, nostalgia or sad beauty in what modern England is now. | |
| The Notwist – Hands On Us Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| This song is about Pope Leo XIII’s prophecy about the future apostasy in Rome "These most crafty enemies have filled and inebriated with gall and bitterness the Church, the spouse of the immaculate Lamb, and have laid impious hands on her most sacred possessions. In the Holy Place itself, where has been set up the See of the most holy Peter and the Chair of Truth for the light of the world, they have raised the throne of their abominable impiety, with the iniquitous design that when the Pastor has been struck, the sheep may be scattered". | |
| The Notwist – This Room Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| This room, our material existence on earth. There is no afterlife, no heaven, no reincarnation, nothing. So the question is what are we going to do with the time we have here. | |
| The Notwist – Good Lies Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
"let's just imitate the real until we find a better one" We construct our reality based on lies we tell ourselves, lies we tell others, lies others tell us. We need these lies to go on, to have any kind of intimacy with others. What else can we do? |

| The Notwist – Where in This World Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
We feel trapped/abandoned on this "circling place" the Earth, Human society, daily routines. Our desperation to escape the stifling mundanity of our lives is what compels us to leave what is familiar and travel. Travel provides no relief from these feelings of desperation and hopelessness as people are fundamentally the same wherever you go. I think the lines "There's no good night It's not a good night" is a reference to Dylan Thomas' poem Do not go gentle into that good night. There is no afterlife, this life here on Earth is all there is for us. There is no escape from this material existence. |
