Red Hot Chili Peppers – Even You Brutus? Lyrics 12 years ago

This song is pretty badass. My favorite from the new album thus far. I love how the singer (whoever Anthony is personifying) is directly challenging two of the biggest villains in history- Brutus and Judas.

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Let's Make Evil Lyrics 12 years ago

I, too, love the Dear Prudence reference. I like the shadiness of this situation with the high school girl as well. It makes for great lyrics! This song is great, especially for a b-side. Personally, I love this album, even though it's considered by many to be their worst since The Uplift Mofo Party Plan.

The Beatles – Come and Get It Lyrics 13 years ago
This song has always reminded me of a gay love affair. Especially the lines where he says "did I hear you say that there must be a catch?" as a reference to "pitching and catching." I'm totally off base on this one most likely, but from the time I first heard this song, I was convinced it was a gay gentlemen trying to seduce a younger man (perhaps a prostitute).

The Beatles – Ask Me Why Lyrics 13 years ago
Can't believe there's only three comments here. This song is so underrated in my opinion. It's so sweet. It's almost like a confession that we're not meant to hear.

Arctic Monkeys – Take It or Leave It (The Strokes cover) Lyrics 13 years ago
I like the Arctic Monkeys, but Alex Turner is no Julian. The cover is decent, but obviously not nearly as good as the original.

Arctic Monkeys – Fake Tales of San Francisco Lyrics 13 years ago
Uh, yeah. Ever heard of a humble NYC band called The Strokes? They sound a lot like the Arctic Monkeys. Or should I say, the Arctic Monkeys sound a hell of a lot like them! : )

I disagree that British bands are trying to be American. That's too general. I think that musicians from all over the English speaking world draw influence from each other, and recycle what they hear in their own warped way. This is true for Americans, Brits, Aussies, Canadians, Kiwis... the whole lot.

Neil Young – The Loner Lyrics 13 years ago
This is one of my top five favorite Neil Young songs. I think the lyrics are pretty powerful. What this song is saying is so definite. This guy is so messed up that there is no changing that so don't even bother, and just step aside. Very scary thought.

America – Ventura Highway Lyrics 13 years ago
One of my all-time favorite songs.

I wonder, why the shift in person? I have to believe that Joe is the narrator. Is he talking to himself? Or mimicking something another has said. I love those lines where he sort of asks and answers himself.

LCD Soundsystem – New York, I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down Lyrics 13 years ago

I, too, am from NYC and I totally feel the message of the song sometimes. Don't get me wrong, I love New York, and it's so amazing in so many ways. I do agree though that Manhattan is lacking the sense of danger and simultaneous coziness it once had. They can still be found in the outer boroughs (especially Brooklyn and Queens) but it's not the same.

The reason I relate to this song is because New York overwhelms me a lot of the time, but it's "still the one pool where I'd happily drown."

Phoenix – Love Like a Sunset (Part 1) Lyrics 13 years ago

This is perhaps my second favorite track on the album (after Armistice).

It's so great! I can't believe there are no comments. I absolutely love the beeping followed by the intense instrumental part. I'm actually glad this song has no lyrics. The beeps serve as the lyrics, in my opinion.

Phoenix – Countdown Lyrics 13 years ago
"Don't say no your breakfast tears are gone/wrong"

That line has always puzzled me. I have no idea what that means. For a while, I thought he was saying "breakfast teas" which oddly enough makes more sense to me.

The Kinks – I'm Not Like Everybody Else Lyrics 13 years ago
I disagree with nomishood, I think it's about genuine defiance.

When looking at it through a 21st century perspective, it might seem sarcastic, or as though it's some sort of commentary, but at the time it was written, that wouldn't have been the sentiment. It's about not wanting to conform, plain and simple.

The Kinks – Shangri-La Lyrics 13 years ago

This is my favorite Kinks song. I can't believe there are so few comments!

Agree with everyone who is praising Ray Davies' lyrics on this one. This song is dripping with sarcasm. The lyrics are made even more powerful because they are spoken so softly.

Also, the first time Ray played this song live was only a few years ago! 2009 or 2010 I believe.

The Strokes – Machu Picchu Lyrics 13 years ago
My favorite track on Angles, definitely. Although, I like every song but one.

I don't understand why they don't play this live!!! I saw them at MSG in NYC last month and this was the one song I really wanted to hear that they didn't play (other than 12:51). They've played a bunch of shows since and still no Machu Picchu.

DEAR STROKES, IF YOU'RE READING THIS BY SOME SLIM CHANCE, PLEASE PLAY MACHU PICCHU NEXT TIME YOU PLAY IN NYC!

Anyway, Julian Casablancas has said several time that he doesn't put too much hidden meaning into the lyrics, and that The Strokes are much more focused on the music. But there is definitely more thought put into the lyrics on First Impressions and Angles compared to the ones from Is This It, which had a slew preliminary versions, all with different lyrics.
