IAMX – Volatile Times Lyrics 13 years ago
great song! i definitely think it's about the music industry, but also about society as a whole. the "i drove through countries" verse makes me think of someone searching for meaning, and then above that he talks about how hard it is to find 'meaning' in a society that expects an 'instant fix' for everything, and maybe a bit of wistfulness for when people were more... i don't know, true, or honest, or staunch in their ideals (the bit about infidels and slum religion made me think this).

anyways. i would love this song even if it didn't have all this meaning behind it, just for the 'adieu to the fuckers' line.

It just sort of blithely breaks your heart and then goes on like nothing ever happened.

I love this song. It always makes me really happy, for some reason, even though it's about break-ups. You don't find very many songs like these - without guile or malice or bitterness or much anger. Also it's reeeeeeeeeeally catchy. I've been singing the "fish in the sea" verse all day. ^_^"

The Antlers – Kettering Lyrics 14 years ago
I personally agree with lanaranjaverde; it's a about a doctor or nurse who works in the hospital, and meets someone from their past - a lover, a friend, a distant family member, something - as a bone cancer patient. The narrator had hurt the other before back when they knew each other well ("the unpayable debt"), and the hurricane thundercloud line could be the narrator's colleagues talking about how depressed/enraged the patient was about their fate, which the narrator finds hard to believe.

The narrator tries to be distant and professional, "When I was checking vitals / I suggested a smile... You said you hated my tone / It made you feel so alone / So you told me / I had to be leaving" but this only hurts the other more. The "sleeping uneven" part could be, as others have said, sleeping beside the patient's bed, or it could be the narrator's guilt at not being able to save the patient.

I don't know, this is just my personal interpretation. I think this song has many different meaning to different people, and it speaks to me even though I have never had cancer, or known someone with cancer. Lovely song, heartbreaking album.

Bim – The Battle Lyrics 14 years ago
I personally think that this song is about a couple who's relationship is deteriorating because the guy is seeing another woman. They're constantly fighting, and eventually split up, but still have regrets or are unsure about the break-up ("Did I lose the battle or win the war? / I move my plans forward but the world was unsure"); even so, they're both jaded now ("As the sun went down and I looked / I knew it would be alright ; But you just sigh, please don't be shy / I'm far too gone to even care who I fight / I feel a little older, when it's over, it's over now.)" The girl doesn't understand why the guy would throw it away for someone else ("I just don't know what you're fighting for") and lost her whole relationship because neither could compromise on the other woman; she can't believe that it could go this far with him continuing to defend his decision ("Now I lost it all 'cause no one surrendered / And all of this and you still defend her").

By the way, when I listen to the song, I hear, "Choose a side, please don't be shy" instead of "But you just sigh". In my opinion, this makes a lot more sense; she wants him to commit to whatever choice he's made.

Lovely song. Their music is so lovely and smooth.
