The White Stripes – Fell In Love With A Girl Lyrics 9 years ago
The vocal parts of this song which are not lyrics, one of which can be heard around the middle of the song, are "ah" sounds that match the melody of one of the guitar parts played at the end of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers's "Mary Jane's Last Dance".

Perhaps the girl Jack fell in love with was more of a plant than a human?

Kyo I was sort of kidding about the becoming god thing but if you really want to I guess...

I know very little Japanese so I had a lot of trouble with this; one thing that threw me was particularly interesting:

What I have as "return again" was originally 「繰り返す」; however my first translation attempt was based off of romaji and the similar sounding words 「くり」 and 「かえす」 (which respectively sound like 「繰り」 and 「返す」) mean "chestnut" and "hatch".

All of the other metaphors in the song combined with that made the song appear a lot dirtier and I wonder if 京 who is known for his wordplay actually intended, or if a chestnut hatching is even that suggestive...

Hurg, I prefer the original.

This is still a good song but there's only like 2 or 3 remixes or remakes diru has done that sound better than the originals.

I'm listening to this song right now and I keep thinking I'm listening to a different diru song every few seconds...lots of parts of this song sound like they became part of later Dir en grey songs and it's really confusing my ears.

Dir En Grey – Merciless Cult (English) Lyrics 14 years ago
" The pessimistic you The merciless you

Religions are often criticized for spewing "You're going to hell" for every little thing.

" And the self-loving you, What are you looking at?

Clergymen tend to appear pretty self righteous even if you just consider the position they claim to have.

" With comparing and getting things in proportion you scream out mad
" You wanted this ending to happen
" You must be a romanticist

This sounds kind of like an "I told you so" about the kind of consequences you get when you tell everyone they're going to be punished just for being human (hint: it doesn't make people happy).

" But I just remembered that there is no love here

In the context of religion this would be a reference to the hypocrisy of talking about a loving god who damns everyone.

" Over and Over somewhere begins to break

In which case this would refer to the inevitable rebellion against said religion.

" Please love me, this blood and the meaning
" Please love me, this day and this value

Seems like a reference to people seeking personal value from being part of a religious...cult.

The title itself would then suggest that those clergymen who run organized religions are "merciless" for benefiting from their members while causing them all the grief described previously under the guise of the false hope mentioned toward the end.

Personally I couldn't see the relationship approaches to describing the song to make as much sense. Cult is an inherently religious word.

Dir En Grey – Erode (English) Lyrics 14 years ago
I wouldn't say he doesn't care. It looks more like he wants to make the person he's with feel better but admits to being "distracted" by his affair and that he's only being nice to the significant other he's supposed to be with so he doesn't feel so guilty.

Reminds me a lot of Yokan, where apparently the narrator cares a lot less.

Between this and Hageshisa I'm sure diru has, assuming they're working on it, an album in the works which would, despite the high bar they've set for themselves, tower over their other albums. They've definitely slowed down album production which is scarier to me than most things. They're still young and they better not quit yet 8[

Dir En Grey – R To The Core (English) Lyrics 14 years ago
I loved diru's old stuff and I hope Kyo doesn't dislike his own older work, but Yokan particularly is based around a theme of apathy which contrasts sharply with modern diru. I prefer their new stuff and part of that is the emotion he pours into it. If this is a song about how silly fans are for complaining about an upgrade to his style and the proper musical exploration the band needs to grow then I have to agree.

All that said Yokan and other old stuff by diru is ~amazing~, but if I'm going to speak personally I might as well say there isn't a single era of the band's discography that I don't like.

Dir En Grey – Red Soil (English) Lyrics 14 years ago
It'd be appropriate for Kyo to tie in criticism of the government with criticism of religion considering the former abuses the latter.

A neutered god could be the god who is controlled by man for man's purposes; I forget the particular phrase but it's a common theme today that "man does not serve God; God serves man" or something. People twist the holy words of whatever prophets are convenient to have God be whatever they need it to be. Emasculating things by neutering them...

tr.v. e·mas·cu·lat·ed, e·mas·cu·lat·ing, e·mas·cu·lates
1. To castrate.
2. To deprive of strength or vigor; weaken.

...pretty common metaphor.

" For the people on the losing end
" Is it tears of emptiness?
" Burn mercy with the National Anthem and understand death by dying
" Justice humps in the sheep yard

Governments are typically accused of misusing the people they govern as puppets for war, often using religion and justice as the incentives (excuses).

I'd guess this song is more about criticizing the government than religion, though it's definitely harping on both.
