I think its state hwy 126 that runs from roughly piru, ca to ventura through fillmore and santa paula -- the 101 wouldn't be ventra hwy since it runs up the entire california coast, and you cant locate "ventura hwy" with google now, maybe, because a few years ago it was renamed -- now it's called "korean war veterans memorial highway", which obviously does not do so well in lyrics, haha |

To better understand this song you have to listen to the album, which starts with "Thunder Road", another song about getting out of a place ("It's a town full of losers, I'm pulling out of here to win") -- so it's about someone who thinks there's a better place, and if they can get there, things will be much better. Another fallacy of youth, though -- with some rare exceptions, this actually works out poorly -- what are they leaving with? Love? But other than that, a used car and two days running money -- with predictable results. But maybe they're still better off than if they hadn't chanced it. |

It's about a guy who tried to have a relationship with a woman who has borderline personality disorder (BPD), and after a long time (and a lot of effort) he realized she was never going to let him (or anyone else, ever) "in" -- so it's more bitter than sweet as a song, since in the end he got hurt and wasted his time. And the woman will just repeat the performance with someone else ad infinitum.
The people who said she's a prostitute -- I can see that -- but she's probably also BPD (BPD's are good actors, you know).
It's definitely not a gooey love song, though.
