| I don't think this song is about a man that's in any kind of "relationship" as we see it. It's about a stalker who fantasizes about a girl he doesn't know. He longs for her touch and wishes that she wanted him. He is deluded by her (perfume) as he is by the alcohol (champagne). She's like a drug. This contrasts with the reality of it (burns, holes in the sheets - lipstick, slap on my cheek). He is ashamed by his unrequited love. He's been depressed and yearning her for years but she's never noticed him. The "slap on the cheek" is her reaction to his most likely forced encounter that went wrong. Her eyes crying "at last" is that emotion towards him (regardless of what kind) that he's always wanted from her. She harshly rejects him so he prepares himself for death. He leaves a note for her and awaits her arrival. He feels that maybe then (after he's given his life) she'll have sympathy for the pain she's put him through. | |
