| There's a lot of references to the Biblical story of Abraham when he is about to sacrifice his son, Isaac. | |

| This is the kind of song that could make you cry or make you really happy. Yesterday it made me happy, today it makes me want to cry. Brilliant. | |

To me this song is supposed to comfort his mother. Looking at all of the lyrics directed towards his mother are both sweet memories and possibly painful ones. It seems to me that maybe his mother was ashamed that she could not give him the life that she wanted to and he's simply comforting her and let her know everything is okay and that he's happy with all that she's done even if things didn't turn out so well. "So may the sunrise bring hope where it once was forgotten". He wants her to know that even though he is grown up and has made his fair share of mistakes [2nd verse] that he's fine and she as nothing to worry about. And then comes the last verse about the dogs. So beautiful. I took this verse as another reference to not being able to give her son the life she wanted to give have. The dog had to give birth in a pantry. Maybe she was upset because she couldn't even provide a good place for the dog and pups to be (hence it being in a pantry, the blood all over the floor, and the fleas on their paws) and then with the "so may the sunrise bring hope where it once was forgotten" after that verse hits home with me when thinking about that last verse. Anyways, thats just my take after a few listens. |

I see it as two possible meanings. The first more literal about the poor boy's wife dying in labor. "The rhythm you know is pulsing and drifting to the grave"-the wife is the rhythm he knows and she is slowly drifting towards death. "hold tight, the bondage of this life is slipping why shouldn't it be me" is another reference towards his dying wife. He wishes he was in her place [i think if one of us is going to suffer why shouldn't it be me?]. The second meaning is more metaphorical. The "life" in this song is their relationship and it is slowly dying. "you'll be asking yourself just one question was i always this way?" could be the boy's realization that he hasn't really done his best in the relationship and caused many of the problems they faced. "you don't want to change, I don't want to change" is another reference to how their relationship is dying. neither of them want to change anything they're doing to possibly make everything better. Just a few brief thoughts. Hopefully y'all will see where I'm coming from, I don't feel like typing a novel:) haha |

| Youth Lagoon – July Lyrics | 14 years ago |

I can't help but think that this song is about a realization the "while 5 years ago i wept and no one knew" [and also the "5 years ago, in my backyard i sang love away] line makes me think that maybe he went there after a bad break up or something thinking that he lost his love or whatnot easing the pain with his guitar. but now 5 years later, with his "lady" and hes come to the realization that he has found love, the real thing this time, and she's sitting right beside him, on the rooftop, watching the little bombs explode in the sky on that 4th of july... and all because he did let go and was able to move on [i made a bridge between us then i slowly burned it], he realized that what he had 5 years ago and what he has now 5 years later are completely different [as in, what he had 5 years ago was not real love, what he has today is] just my thoughts..., anyone else get that feeling? |

| Bon Iver – Beth/Rest Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
This is what Justin Vernon said in an interview about this song: "Perth" is this awakening or this birth. And to relate it to some of the conversation we've been having, it's sort of that moment when you have decided to wake up and take control. And "Beth/Rest" is the death, but it's a good death. It's good winter. But it's a rest; it's not this final thing. "Beth" seems like this really cool name for a place you just go to be in paradise forever." http://www.npr.org/blogs/allsongs/2011/06/23/137328981/bon-ivers-justin-vernon-talks-about-his-bands-new-album |

| Fleet Foxes – Helplessness Blues Lyrics | 14 years ago |

To me this is all about living a simple life. EXPLANATION: For me when I was younger I knew exactly what I wanted to be. I felt like I could do anything I wanted, I was going to be famous. I was going to be that snowflake that was most unique. But lets face it, not everyone is going to be the president of the united states or a famous actor. Seems like he's come to realize that and is wondering what he is really going to do with his life. He settles down and gets a job working in the office obeying orders in those dim lit halls by the people who run the company or whatever and becomes comfortable with that idea ["after some thinking, I'd say I'd rather be a functioning cog in some great machinery serving something beyond me..."] He soon comes to realize thats not what he wants and still doesn't know what to do. All he does know is how breathtakingly beautiful the world is ["If I know only one thing, it's that everything that I see of the world outside is so inconceivable often I barely can speak yeah I'm tongue-tied and dizzy and I can't keep it to myself...] and dreams of a simple life of owning and working in an orchard while his wife comes to own a store. I feel like at the end of the song he's wishful thinking, like he's telling himself 'if only, if only...' Maybe that's a reason why this song is called helplessness blues. He wishes he chosen the simple life, but its helpless because of what he's already chosen? Not sure |

| Radical Face – Doorways Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| To me this song is all about childhood. When we were kids there was no such thing as impossible, we believed we were indestructible and we were free. Gah how I miss those days of pure imagination, bliss, joy, innocence...what I'd give to leave the worries of the world and go back to when it didn't matter.. | |

I agree with anniesomething. I think this song is about the fear of letting your walls down and just the fear of falling in love, especially when you meet someone capable of breaking down your walls. I think this song focuses on the fear of meeting and having someone capable of breaking down your walls that have build up around yourself over the years to where you become so comfortable in those walls that it becomes "home" "Sleep, sleep with the lights on"-shows the fear of letting walls down. "Shutter and shades drawn, theres too many windows"-fear that there is too many openings for someone to sneak past the walls or just the feeling of being vulnerable and letting your walls come down. "cars on the freeway, tempting a clean break, theres no where left to go"- its very easy to just get out of relationships for fear of heartbreak or get out of the relationship before you become too attached, it saves a lot of pain for when/if things end. its the 'clean break' "With walls, built up around us, The bricks make me nervous, They're only so strong"-fear of your walls coming down and falling in love. "plates they will shift"-that part, to me, is talking about the actual process of your walls coming down. Things, perspectives, feelings, etc. they will change and when those walls are down you wake up and nothings like it was before- "nothings the same as yesterday" |
