As with any songwriter, Matt's past experiences are going to greatly influence his work, so I feel that it would be unavoidable for him to not be thinking about his former heroin abuse when he developed this song. I completely agree that this song is about the mistakes Matt has made over his life and about how by accepting that he made mistakes to begin with (rather than covering them up) he is able to learn from them. The song is certainly not limited to Matt's mistakes in the drug world, but those mistakes and the lessons learned from them are certainly going to be present in Matt's songwriting. I idolize Matt's grip on human nature and his raw ability to express his emotions and perspectives so powerfully through his voice and his words |
