I agree that this is not an essentially sad song. It is instead an expression of a lovely dream world when anyone can love anyone and express that love to that world... |

I see it as a very passionate love song, but a love that is hot and an afterthought and that leaves later... too soon; but the heat and the tension were worth it or on another plain.
It was enough to turn the world. I wonder how he got burned, whether the relation ended so soon.. that this was it, the burn. |

| Belle & Sebastian – The State I Am In Lyrics

This is a nice bit of information, pertinent to the song, that was posted on the lastfm page: "@ralfsu: The new documentary Pitchfork came out with last week (it is very well made and absolutely worth watching if you are a fan of this album or Sinister at all) sheds a bit of light on the meaning of this song. It is almost autobiographic of Stuart Murdoch who had been bedridden for a couple of years before he started Belle & Sebastian. As he was reintegrating himself into society he'd go on bus rides around town just for the hell of it. He credits his recovery from the illness to divine intervention and he started to visit church weekly. Giving himself to providence. The whole thing carries a feeling of general aimlessness to me that's trying to be filled with religion. I do like that interpretation about the man who is being pushed into relationships finally getting a break cause his siblings have taken the spotlight for a while. But of course, this didn't happen. It's a dream and I think the narrator longs for being able to stay out of the spotlight for a while. " |

He is terribly depressed, can't hardly get out of bed. All he does all day is drink alcohol, eat what is handy (chips), and watch gay porn. He is completely sad and alone, and the isolation is driving him nearly insane. "This thing has got me on my knees." |

| Keane – He Used To Be A Lovely Boy Lyrics
| 12 years ago

|
Perhaps this song is about an aging man, who used to be a lovely boy. He has overstayed his attractiveness somewhat, turning heads only as he leaves or if he leaves. His head is in the clouds, but he must face the reality of what time has wrought. He must move on, as his adventure in love is still ahead of him, he still has that to complete; but he must free himself from the fantasy, the denial perhaps, of the fact that he is--no longer--a lovely boy other than, perhaps, in his mistaken mind. |

| of Montreal – Feminine Effects Lyrics

He was young and sheltered. Bobby was "sophisticated," took him to the big city. He wanted to please Bobby. He tried his best to be what Bobby wanted. But he couldn't help but be himself, and to him Bobby's lifestyle was not a good fit. And he felt that he wasn't up to Bobby's standards, too. He didn't make Bobby's high style "cut."
So, he let himself show, he laughed at the limousine, the limousine lifestyle perhaps.
He was sorry. He just snickered at a thing: a pretentious thing. But Bobby laughed at HIM. He never thought that he was something to be laughed at.... |

The singer speaks of two people, Camilo and Caroline, right? Is he not communicating with Camilo, perhaps getting advice or sharing with him about Caroline? |

I'm quite sure he sings, "I do believe if you don't like things, you leave; for some place you've never gone before." I seems clear audibly to me, and makes much more sense. |

| Low – Over the Ocean Lyrics
|
The idea of god is that it is something huge and over all there is, even over the largest thing: the ocean, which is huge and ineffable and full of life. This is from god's perspective, this song. She is so large, he is over the empire....
And if that idea, of a god over all, can prevail; if it is an idea that "belongs" in the face of all time, then god will be around longer than reason and science. AND god will be used, as always, by those who pursue and conquer and become empire; and by those who remain weak, and meek, in the face of the evil and cruelty that is sometimes a part of life and almost always a sign of power.
But, if "I am wrong," if the meek shall not inherit the earth by being meek; then, and only then perhaps, will the mighty and strong be rejected and the meek will indeed prevail.
OR>>>> Maybe the song is about . . . SATAN! |
