I think the last part... "Just so you know, you're my shining light, every night that takes me home When I'm still not home when you wake up Please don't feel like you should give up on me." Should be... "Just hold on, you're my shining light, every night, that takes me home. Just hold on, you're my shining light, every night, that takes me home. If I'm still not home when you wake up Please don't feel like you should give up on me." |

I read through many excellent comments about the meaning of this song, and they greatly helped me shape my own opinion. I feel that the song as a whole is about a man's love for his best friend. The first verse, as it has been stated, is meant for the significant other of the person he loves. I feel he is pondering these questions rather than actually asking them. The chorus is pretty self-explanatory. He is giving all of his love to this person, and feels like this is the one for him. I believe in verse two he is trying to write down his feelings and explain/express his life. He, however, can not put into words what he feels. Hence the white blank page. The swelling rage comes from the aforementioned white blank page and the reasons for it's emptiness. The last two lines of verse two, "You did not think when you sent me to the brink, the brink. You desired my attention but denied my affections, my affections", explain the type of relationship he has with the person he loves. His friend vies for his attention, but when he advances those feelings he is turned away. He loves her, but she does not feel the same way about him. That rejection from the person he loves is enough to make him discouraged, and it "sent (him) to the brink, the brink". The last two lines of the song could be referring to one of two different things. Option 1 - If she is open and honest with him about her feelings, maybe then he can move on with his life. Option 2 - He could be waiting for her come to a conclusion about her own feelings. Maybe she does love him and he is saying he will wait for her until she can "lead him to the truth" aka admit there is love. When she does, he will be hers forever. I feel option 2 makes more sense when thinking about the song as a whole. Again, this just my interpretation, but I feel that I am pretty spot on. What do you think? |
