Shudder to Think – Gang of $ Lyrics 14 years ago
I think this song is about groupies, and the mixed feelings one gets from being with them. This would be especially true in the early to mid-nineties when the song was written. Rock and roll excess was kinda passe' at the time, but Shudder To Think were kind of the exception to the rule, especially in the UBER-P/C world of DC hardcore from which the band sprang. I think STT embraced that culture with a knowing wink and a nod.

"My mouth is a cold sore display case." - STD imagery, anyone?

"All over town they've got these like messenger girls that ride around on innertubes" - Girls that go from band to band riding on condom covered cocks.

"Their asses are all scraped up, their eyes cold." - They've been used and abused and are completely numb to any emotional attachment.

"Kick me off the bus, y'all." - A bandmember has to wait outside while his bandmate gets his groove on in the tour bus.

"One honey donut and your lips are stuck to the seat" - After a sweet piece of ass ("honey donut") you're getting sick ("lips are stuck to the seat") the seat being the toilet.

I think you get the picture.

Hum – I Hate It Too Lyrics 14 years ago
When I was in college, I heard a rumor that, during the recording of this album, Matt Talbott's girlfriend committed suicide. So he scrapped all of the vocals, rewrote and re-recorded them, some even with different melodies. I'm not sure if it's true or not, but one can see it's plausibility when looking at the lyrics.

"I wish the ceiling was the ground." - He wishes he was in heaven with her.

"I'll send you flowers made of silent tiny pieces of the sun to help me make up for this one." - He feels regret over something that he did to drive her away.

"While you send me tidal waves of love when you're alone and I can't remember what you do." - He took her for granted and didn't reciprocate her feelings.

"To find a way to turn the signal back to heaven sounding blue and bring me faithful back to you." He wants his love, seeped in sadness and regret (sounding blue) to reach her in heaven and reunite them as they should have been all along.

Again, not sure of the verisimilitude of the rumor, but it does have a certain tragic romance to it.

The Dismemberment Plan – What Do You Want Me to Say? Lyrics 14 years ago
Hmmmm... not so sure, Whiteclef. While it is relatively public knowledge that Travis leans towards the right politically and is a practicing Christian (he's blogged about Church choir practice,) I was told that he was in a disintegrating relationship during the recording of the album. This lead to his then girlfriend breaking up with him, over the phone, just as he was set to lay down the vocal track to this particular song. They actually reference that exact event in the liner notes to the recent vinyl reissue of the album. That is the beauty of his lyrics, though...different people can glean different meanings from them. But I do, honestly believe it's a breakup song.

The Dismemberment Plan – Gyroscope Lyrics 14 years ago
Actually, I believe the song is primarily in 15/16 time. The sixteenth note gets the accent, not the eighth. If you count it out as a quick 1234 1234 1234 123, it makes sense. During the verse, it's 3 bars of 15/16, one of 2/4 and one of 5/4, then three 15/16, one 2/4, one 19/16 (5/4 minus one 16th note, I'm not joking). During the chorus, it's alternating three at 15/16 and one at 4/4. You really need to count like Dracula to keep up. Genius.
