I see it as being about a person who is, at their core, a thoughtful pessimist. They enjoy being happy, but are dragged down by their pessimism (darkside), which is beautiful because it's well thought out, instead of just being a pessimist for the sake of itself. However, the person knows that their pessimism is destroying both their self and his relationships with people, which is ultimately more important than the 'theology of their pessimism'. It's a truly beautiful song. One of The Crime's best. |

I see it as the following: the song happens during/close to a person's death bed the first verse is experiencing the holy spirit the second verse is experiencing sin and the 'devil's call' the chorus is human rejection/denial to both the bridge is God stating that he made His will (verse 1) clear the song does not let us know if the person came back to God or not, but at the end they die "and now it's over" |
