On songwriting: Bob Dylan said or something to the effect of “when ya find yerself in it get out as quick as you can”. "This Magnetic Fields song feels to me like an example of exactly that. Had he gotten dumped weeks or months earlier? Had he gone thru all the standard grief progressions ie anger, forgiveness, self blame, denial or whatever then arrived one day at the perfect moment with instrument in hand, phone unplugged and just got it all out? In one go? Well one day maybe I’ll find out. Anyhoo I’m on my 6th listen in a row and every time it fucks me up n gets my heart racing and my head reeling. Wait stop reverse that. Or whatever. The first time I played it it made me well up. Fuggin weird how totally put me back in that space. Dumped. Phew. Well I think this might be the best song I’ve ever heard in my life.
