Hmm, I'd always thought the line in the second verse was "Well you've MISSED so much", which I think would fit in well with Chell's story -- she's been trapped in Aperture for long she's missed out on living her life. Hell, by the end of game 2 she's lost a few centuries of history. But "lived so much" as an above poster mentioned goes perfectly with Rattmann's story. Spending years alone, hiding and crazy would give anybody the worn-out and hopeless tone this song has. |

I think this is about a relationship between a black man and a white woman. A lot of the images the speaker uses relate to the racist image of black men as being sexually aggressive and threatening to white women (an abductor, "probing" her, making her a "victim"), as if she has been taught to see him as a predator and feel like his prey. The "Whole 'nother world,/ A different dimension" thing sounds to me like segregation, and "alien" and "so foreign" with everything else I've quoted remind me of the them-and-us mentality which intolerant people try to create between races. The speaker is using all this ironically to show just what bullshit she's been taught all along -- that a relationship with a black man will "poison" her, but now she's been enlightened ("you open my eyes") and feels free to be with him ("lead me into the light"). And let's not even mention "Different DNA" ... Kanye's lyrics in the video version show the same stereotype image of blacks: "dirty mind", "filthy ways", "a legend" (as in not the real thing, a stereotype), "irreverent", which he uses in irony. The "bathe my ape in your milky way" image seems like something pure and white being sexually degraded by something animal-like, and "alien sex", rather than being literal as a lot of people seem to take this song, refers to the taboo of their relationship, being told by others that what they have is wrong in some way. The music video also seems to relate to this, with Perry (who's been made into the alien herself by the dehumanising bullshit she's been taught) falling to earth, symbolising her realisation of how false the racial divisions are, then the albino black man (someone without a racial category to fall into, so they're just purely human) and gazelle (NOT goat)-legged Perry finding each other and walking off in peace toward the sunset. Though the gazelle legs I can't put my finger on ... maybe she's been purified by her realisation (a wounded gazelle appears earlier in the video, at the end Perry's legs are whole and unwounded), something like that. |
