GAYLE – abcdefu Lyrics 2 years ago
From the first time I heard this, I felt it was someone expressing herself, same way as getting a tattoo, or other form of expressive art. I find it liberating, even listening to it, and as a father to a teen daughter, empowering and even using this song as a discussion topic, to see how she feels about it. Something that happened, maybe a statement on society today, a very close business acquaintance of mine, someone for all intents and purposes, is a decent human and smart, thoughtful, etc. He brought this song up in conversation, and said he thinks it's offensive, and shouldn't be played on radio. He said "women shouldn't use that kind of language in anger, it's okay to use it in regular conversation, but a female shouldn't, because it makes them look weak and emotional and kind of crazy. I asked him to elaborate, he told me it's mostly his wife that feels that way, and he agrees, and he agrees that women should be careful how they're perceived, as it could get them into trouble and "attract the wrong crowd". I gave him plenty of opportunitiy to explain more, and after a few minutes I just told him that if he really feels that way then we can't do business together anymore. He tried to backpedal his words, but haven't spoken to him in a year. He didn't understand the irony of it... we all can choose who we spent time with, and here's GAYLE expressing how angry she is having given her love to someone that "always put yourself above me"....she realized it, gave him chances, and said fuck you, I'm out. That guy, my former business friend, was saying that she should be quiet and polite and not express anger on that situation, or she'll be labeled as crazy? I told him, imagine if she didn't - that's what depression is, anger turned inward when repressed and stuffed down. The reason why it's ironic, he has a Masters In Industrial Psychology and Organizational Development, and speaks to thousands of people a year in how to treat employees. I was shocked, and I hope he learned something. I certainly did. My barometer, is my daughter... our conversation about that song and how she interpreted it is gold. I thank GAYLE, for being who she is and getting it all out there for people to listen and interpret. If I'm thinking in the right way, the GAYLE would be happy to hear that my daughter and I are talking about her song. Thank you to GAYLE, you're being heard and you're making a difference, in at least one person's life.

Manchester Orchestra – The Maze Lyrics 3 years ago
Hi, I\'m on mission to understand the origin of everything this group produces! They\'re profound and I\'m just amazed by them. The Maze - my interpretation, is exactly that... it brought me into being a Dad, and the beginning of the song, I can hear those thoughts coming from my son and daughter in their first year of living. "I notice you when you\'re noticing me... Give me some time to learn how to speak.. I\'m a maze to you."....\n\n"I\'m amazing" lyric is what made me weep. It\'s real... young people think they\'re amazing, and they know it... adults rarely say that, "I\'m amazing", they fear it\'ll be judged. But, we all are amazing. The baby mind actually says it, in this lyric.\n\nThe whole song and album is "amazing"... and I\'m not going to stop listening to Manchester Orchestra. Love them. Thanks for letting me express my interpretation. You\'re "amazing"!

Pearl Jam – Garden Lyrics 5 years ago
One of my favorite PJ songs, but only today, 28 years after first hearing it - do I truly belief this is inspired by the Lord of the Rings. We all know Led Zeppelin wrote many songs inspired by Tolkien, and PJ was inspired by LZ. Not sure if PJ love for Tolkien but they are the most well read band I've ever known, i.e. The Master and Margarita. I'm hardly a Tolkien expert but I read the books and saw the movies. I rewatched the trilogy, then by chance rewatched PJ20 and saw the Stockholm footage from 1992-ish, when they played Garden in front of like 20 ppl (man, if only). Anyway, amazing timing, both being front of mind. "The direction of the eye, so misleading" is actually quite overt. Frodo was drawn to the eye of Sauron, located at Mordor. "The defection of the soul"... a common theme in LOTR.... "hands bound" - that happened. "Face blood" - that happened. "shadow flag" - I always wondered what that meant but I can remember "shadow" being mentioned like 20 times in the books, and movies - it means death. Or, darkness, also referring to death. Walking into the Garden of stone, is pretty straight forward, it's the "depths of Mordor" also in LZ's Ramble On. I'm not sure, but I'm pretty inspired by the possibility that this is true. I don't think I'm right, but also think this feeling of inspiration is why Eddie writes his prose... not just Eddie, but it's almost like they need to get it out. If they don't, they'll go to the "shadow" world and wither away. I can absolutely relate to that feeling, similar to Nothing Man. If I'm not attached to my purpose, or to the people that help me along in life, then I'm like a kite without a string. Imagine Frodo without Samwise Gamgee. Eerily similar feeling. I've been there, both with my Samwise and without. I'll walk into any deep dark forest or garden of stone with my closest people that lift me up towards my purpose. Without them, I might as well wither away. Many before me on this site refer to the Dylan Thomas poem - I think it's the same feeling. No right, no wrong, but the feeling and inspiration is definitely connected. Just like we all are. Love you.

Midnight Oil – Tin Legs and Tin Mines Lyrics 14 years ago
One of my favorite groups all time is Candlebox, and their name was inspired by the lyrics of this Midnight Oil song....."Boxed in like candles, polar bear pride
Turning to terror as the script is read out
Unwilling actors accomplished protractors will shout"
